We are now a 10 seed that finds itself in the Sweet 16 – and playing an 11 seed. Anyone below an 8 seed is supposed to lose in the first round. I wondered how often low seeded team (9 or worse), had gotten to the Sweet 16, how well they have done ad how often they had played another low seed there.

1979: The first year the tournament was seeded was 1979, (the year Magic Johnson won it). It was not a 64 team tournament yet but there were 9 and 10 seeds.

St. John’s was a 10 seed and they beat #7 seed Temple and #2 seed Duke to make it to the S16, where they beat #6 Rutgers and then lost to Pennsylvania in the Elite 8. They won their games by 5, 2 and 2 points and then lost by 2 points.

Pennsylvania was the #9 seed that year and beat #8 seed Iona, (by 4), and #1 North Carolina, (by 1), to make it to the S16,then beat #4 Syracuse, (by 8), and then St. John’s to make it to the Final Four where the Spartans crushed them, 67-101.

So two of 8 low seeds made the Sweet 16 where they won 2 S16 games and 1 E8 game. There was one game between two low seeds but it was in the E8, not the S16

1980: The tournament now had 48 teams so each region had a 9 seed, a 10 seed, an 11 seed and a 12 seed.
#10 Lamar nipped #7 Weber State by a point in the West and then upset #2 Oregon State to make the Sweet 16, where they lost to#6 Clemson.
That’s a total of 24 low seeds, three of which made it to the Sweet 16 with 2 S16 wins, an E8 win.

1981: #9 seed St. Joseph’s beat #8 Creighton by 2 points and upset #1 seeded and ranked DePaul by a point, then beat #5 seed Boston College by another point before getting crushed by 32 against #3 Indiana’s national champions in the Mideast regional final.
40 low seeds and 4 Sweet 16 teams with 3 wins and 1 E8 win.

1982: No low seed made the Sweet 16.

88 low seeds, 6 S16 teams with 4 wins and 1 E8 win.

2016 so far:
#10 Syracuse beat #7 Dayton and #15 Middle Tennessee State to make it to the Sweet 16 where we will play #11 Gonzaga who beat #6 Seton Hall and #6 Utah. This will be the fifth time tow low seeds will meet in the Sweet 16 and third time they were double figure seeds. The higher seeded team won 3 of the 4 prior such contests.

There have been 1116 low seeds, (#9-16) since 1979 and 64 of them have made the Sweet 16, (5.7%), where they are 15-46(.326). The 15 low seeds that made it to the Elite 8 are 5-10 there (.333). All five of those teams lost in the national semi-finals. These teams are seeded low for a reason and if you are one of them, don’t make big plans.

But, hey, you never know. .

1052 low seeds, 61 S16 teams with 15 wins and 5 E8 wins. We also have the fourth time two low seeds met in the S16 and the second time they were double digit seeds.

2015: #11 UCLA beat #6 Southern Methodist and #14 UAB before losing to #2 Gonzaga in the S16.
1084 low seeds, 62 S16 teams with 15 wins and 5 E8 wins.

These teams are seeded low for a reason and if you are one fo them, don’t make big plans.
