Ok so let me first say I have no doubt been more critical this year in general which is a deviation from the norm for me but it's increased a little year over year since 2016. It's been a roller coaster since then with a lot of ups and downs.
Now here we get to the year of the pandemic where everything got blown up.
Let me share something of my own situation to kick this off. In early-mid February I tested positive for CoVid. My symptoms were extreme fatigue for a few days then brain fog and memory issues since then that don't seem to fully go away. This past week, despite being far removed a new symptom came about- shortness of breath and trouble with long distance running. One disclaimer is I had some issues with this before in the past but it was a separate problem that I was able to resolve. I am not a spring chicken at 37 but still can hammer out 40-60 miles a week at 7 or less pace. In the past week I've struggled to hit 20 and been at 10-12.
Why am I over sharing? Well I am doing so because when you combine the brain fog issues with physical challenges it puts an incredible strain on doing both your work and what you love physically. With expertise in multiple disciplines and the ability to think and act on the fly I work fast. Now for the last two months everything is at a crawl. Re reading the same material for two hours before a presentation even after having it down the day before, losing my thoughts mid presentation and just doing things that were uncharacteristic.
Seeing now the physical challenges paired with the mental I am not sure I can honestly be so critical of some of the guys on the team. College hoops is fast paced and you don't get five minutes on the court to think or figure things out. You also aren't going to succeed if the things that are usually second nature are much more difficult. I am fully in the camp that we might be underestimating the impact of this virus on our team this year and to key players. I think that while we are losing a great player, it's absolutely fair to be optimistic that a full non CoVid summer with good health gives the guys a real chance to come in next year improved.
It doesn't mean the questions around this year are invalid but I think the biggest thing we have underestimated is the Virus and it's compounding impact. I know for me with this new symptom it's possible it is going to continue to make work and life a bigger challenge than I would prefer. Let's give the kids a real shot and support. I know others have been through some of this too. All I can say is this thing is nasty and it can linger. It can full fledge bring you to a lesser version of yourself without you having a say in it.
I'm looking forward to the new additions and hoping the Sweet 16 run provides momentum into next year.
