Considering how good UL has been on Offense and bad on Defense, believe our Offense and Defense should be graded on a curve-I.E. The Offense was worse than it looked and Defense isn't as bad as it looked in that game. I don't feel great about either one to be "consistently good", though. Getting only 1 TD in the 1st half against that defense, which is last in the ACC, is a killer, and we wouldn't even have gotten that w/o a roughing the passer from them on a 3rd down play.
OL continues to play very well, which gives us a better idea of how to grade Devito. At this point, he reminds me of a more, athletic Ken O'brien for those long-time Jets fans like myself. If he has a clean pocket and some time, he's good. If not, then not. I have no hope that he's going to complete a pass when he scrambles. I also have little confidence we can convert on 3rd and long. Ever. We also rarely get YAC b/c he's not hitting receivers in stride. Doesn't mean he can't improve, though.
Notice how much better our RB's look when our OL is good. Moe Neal and JJ were tremendous.
We definitely left a lot of points on the board. Did not like the play calling or time management in the 4th Quarter. The play calling after the Cisco was a microcosm of it. Cisco makes a huge play, grabs momentum for us, and what do we do? 1st down-Run up the middle, 2nd down-run up the middle, 3rd-very low percentage pass down the field that had no chance. Why no slants, no throwing to the RB out of the backfield, which has been very successful practically every time we do it. Just seeing very little creativity out there, which has been consistent throughout the year, but now we can't give the OL excuse
Definitely don't think taking Devito out in that spot was pure injury-related-Don't care what Babers says to the media. I'm not saying he wasn't hurting, but nothing happened injury-wise on his last play.
Agree w/ those who wish we would have utilized Jawhar the whole season. At this point, you obviously don't waste a year of eligibility to possibly go 5-7. He is ELECTRIC and hope we utilize him Reggie Bush-style next year, lining him up everywhere.
As stated elsewhere, our Special teams have had a major nosedive this year. Surprising with almost all of the same key guys back there. Tons of penalties, allowing big returns galore, and having very few returns. Being late to get everyone on the field for the FG is inexcusable and seems to have happened a few times.
I know this will be obvious, but the big issue on Defense is Tackling. We were generally there to make the play, but constantly missed tackles, often several on one play. If I was a masochist, I'd watch the game and count how many tackles we missed. I would bet it would be as high as 20. Considering how few tackles we break on Offense, it is disheartening to see. This has been a problem all year, and to a lesser extent, most of the last few years. If I'm the DC, if you miss a couple of tackles, you miss be tired, so take a break on the bench and let's see what the next guy can do. We also need some bigger DT's who can hold their ground. Really miss Slayton and need to look everywhere, JC, CC, Transfer Portal, for some space eaters there. I rarely see our DT's making plays.
In spite of the one recent commitment, has been very quiet on the recruiting front for months, too quiet. How many quality 2020 prospects have visited all season? We need to be everywhere recruiting after this next game. I think we also need another top recruiter or two w/ good recruiting connections.
