The Big East has seven teams ranked and the B1G has six. So why are many "experts" annointing the B1G as THE premier conference this year. Over the weekend, I heard one guys said that whomever wins the B1G will definitely win the NC and I heard another guy say that the Indiana team this year is as good, if not better, than the Bobby Knight/Scott May/Quinn Buckner/Kent Benson teams of the mid 70's.

Minnesota still being in those rankings are a joke.

In ESPN's BPI the Big 10 has 4 teams out of 12 in the 100's, the Big East has 3. For the Big 10 33% of their teams are horrible, for us less then 25%. Northwestern-106, Purdue-122, Nebraska-140, Penn State-206 Michigan shouldn't even get credit for a home win. The Big East Rutgers-102, Seton Hall-103, DePaul-141. Their top 5 are rated higher, but our top 8 Notre Dame is 43, their 7 is Iowa at 51.

I buy the big ten hype. The top half has been beating up on each other week in week out.

Based on KP

Top 3rd
B10 : 2,5,11,12
BE : 3,4,7,19,23

Mid 3rd:
B10: 13,14, 34, 41
BE: 25,48,54,55,60

Bottom 3rd:
B10: 85,95, 143, 198
BE: 88,103,116,140, 155

Really its 4-5-6-7 vs 5-6-7-8-9 where they move clearly ahead

I dont like BPI because it is influenced a lot by RPI -- in general RPI is an extremely poor measure to compare teams.

South Florida blows.

I compared 2013 B10 vs 2011 BE.

Top 3rd
B10 : 2,5,11,12
BE : 4,10,11,14,15

Mid 3rd:
B10: 13,14, 34, 41
BE: 21,23,32,33,40

Bottom 3rd:
B10: 85,95, 143, 198
BE: 42,59.78,96, 127, 202

Fairly comparable. BE is stronger at bottom.

The Big10 is like the ACC, two schools carry the conference. Let's see someone other than Michigan St and Ohio St do something in the NCAA tournament, then I'll believe the hype.

Numbers aside, I think we're a pretty equal conference competitive wise. I don't see anything from either conference that makes them the best unquestioned.

The BIG is good, but overated. My fear, cuse is 1-6 all time vs big in ncaa. losses :83 OSU, 87, &**(())) 89 illinois, 90, gophers, 2000, msu, 2013, osu, won vs wisconson, am I missing anything?

I think the top of the B1G (indiana and Michigan) is better than than the top of ours (cuse and Loiusville) at this point. As far as depth I stil think the Big East is better. Ohio State is a one man show which never works in the NCAA, Wisconsin is never really capable of scoring enough to go deep, Minnesota is not nearly as good as people think.

It may be perception as we have more teams in the league so it looks like a greater percentage of their teams are "good". I would put our 3-8 against theirs any day.

1980 Iowa

Perception is that the BE will have 2/3 of teams exit the Tourney after the 1st weekend. That may be one reason we are not in that discussion as a conference.

The B1G is better at the top but the B1G is overrated. Indiana is the best team in the nation this year, but they aren't unbeatable. Michigan State is tough team, Michigan and Ohio State are overrated and haven't been anybody outside of each other at the top of the B1G this year. Wisconsin is a team I would want nothing to do with as they are probably the B1G's 3rd best team. Minnesota isn't that scary and Illinois is a tournament. Penn State, Northwestern, Iowa, Purdue, Nebraska are all NIT to tomato can schools. The B1G is not this great conference its made out to be.
2 top 10 teams (no.1 Indiana and top 10 Michigan State
2 top 15 teams (Michigan and Wisconsin)
1 top 25 team Ohio State( who is 1-7 against ranked teams and has only 1 good win Michigan)
Basically the 2012-2013 B1G is a standard Big East from 2008-2011, but don't tell that to media who are having an orgy talking about how great the B1G is.

I think its clear enough that the Big Ten is the best (and why would you ignore numbers?) . That being said, "clear" does not mean the margin is anything that significant. And some people are seemingly making it a large margin when it is not - so it can be best and yet still overrated.

I think using top 25 ranking is sort of flawed to answer this question, as those rankings consist the bias which we are questioning.

The strength of a conference is typically determined before January 5 (when OOC games largely finish). After that it's all teams beating up each other, and unless you really value top heavy conferences, not much should change.

EDIT - I looked at the number of top 50 wins OOC (or top 75 road/neutral) and there is not much of a difference in terms of number. -- both conferences play alot of cupcakes -- as an aside its really unfair that Syracuse takes the brunt of those comments each year)

One thing that separated the Big East in 2011 is the number of pre-season tournaments it won in November/December 2010. B10 did not do the same this year.
