Hey everyone,

I did a little re-cap of fan fest last year so I figured I would do it again.

First off it was nice to see some football again. Seems like I have been waiting forever. Can't wait for some real games to be on. My life just doesn't feel complete without some football on tv over the weekend.

I arrived at around 3:45 and figured there wouldn't be many people there yet because the team was not scheduled to start until 4:30. Well, to my surprise the parking lot in front if the melo center had quite a few cars in it. I was thinking that can't be for fan fest is it? Working my way around the parking lot closer to the football fields I realized it indeed was. The parking was close to capacity at 3:45. I must say it was the most fans I have ever seen at a fan fest type pre season event. The soccer field bleachers were full with some people standing along the fence for viewing.

As advertised there was some bounce houses for the kids, free pop corn and cotton candy, stickers, posters, etc. season ticket holders could pick up tickets. There was even a little blow up tunnel that fans had to walk through to reach the area where the bounce houses were. It was of course advertising NY's College Team.

This led to the fan area over by the football practice fields. The players later came over to the soccer stadium for their scrimmage for the fans.

The air horn blew and the players lined up and made their way over to the soccer field. They ran out getting a big round of applause from the I'd say 2500 fans or so. (Total guess). Matt Park even was announcing through the PA which was new. It was nice to hear the players names and such for those who don't have the roster memorized like us crazy fools.

First up was 1st team offense and 2nd string defense. I noticed there was no Brisly Estime. I couldn't even spot him on the sideline. Later I found out he has an ankle sprain and didn't practice today. PHEW! Hopefully he's back soon. Next I looked at the line. Left to right it was Hickey, Palmer, Miller, Trudo, Foy. Hickey really stood out. Guy is just a man. Wide receivers were West, Flemming, Broyld and Avant. These guys seemed like the first team. Obviously sub Brisly for Avant. Wide receivers rotated A LOT. So I can't remember who was where. They all got a lot of run. Hunt was obviously the number 1 at QB. Gulley and Phillips came out in a two back shotgun set. (Interesting). More on these guys by position later.

Next was 1st team Defense vs 2nd team offense. First observation was no Crume. He was on the sideline and appeared as though he did drills over on the practice fields before the team came over. We know what we got here. No surprises on defense, line up wise. Reddish and Whigham at corner. Eskridge and Kelly at the safety spots. Hodge manning the middle with Lynch and Davis covering the outside line backing slots. Robinson and Welsh were at defensive end with Thompson and I think big Wayne Williams clogging the middle at D Tackle.

I will give a little further description of what I saw at each position group.

Offense:

QB- I think Hunt has really grown this off season. He appeared much more calm and in control out there than I remember last pre season. He had some nice 30-35 yd passes to both West and Broyld. The offense was picking on Corey Winfield a little bit. West beat him up the sideline and Hunt put the ball right on the money. Broyld burnt a corner on another play for a would be touch down but hunt didn't lead him quite enough, still a completion for a nice gain. He zipped another pass to Josh Parris on a little TE curl over the middle who turned it up for a nice gain. One thing I noticed was Hunt seemed to read/see the whole field much better. Of course this is in practice but I have reason to believe he will find the receivers quicker this year. I am excited to see what Hunt can do this year. Long came in next, little surprised here. He did ok though. He is coming along looked much better than spring. Long and Hunt got the most reps and Kimble came in next. I honestly thought Kimble looked a little shaky. Could have been a bad day. Wilson barely got any run but let me say for the little he was in there he threw two beautiful balls. BEAUTIFUL. One to Ishmael up the sideline and he lofted it right over the corner and into the receivers hands.

RB- As I noted earlier, the first formation we saw utilized two RBs, both Gulley and Phillips, in a shotgun dual RB set. Phillips is a quick shifty little guy. Makes me think Brisly Estime but RB version. Weak side RB would go in motion for a swing like pass. Could be some interesting play calls out of this. Next Adonis Ameen Moore absolutely trucked true freshman Cordell Hudson, poor guy. I liked what I saw from Adonis today. Can see him getting a few touches this year. Morris and McFarlane both had some nice runs. One run I remember Morris was given a sweep to the far side of the field and I thought for sure he would be tackled. He turned it up some how for a nice gain. This guy has some jets. I think RB will be a position of strength this year.

WR- When the coaches said they would be rotating WRs well they were right. Pretty much everyone got run today. If we can't find some guys out if this group that are playmakers, then we are doing something wrong.
I can only recall two drops. Seems like everything that was thrown to the receivers was caught. Blocking seemed to be improved and I really liked what I saw from Ishmael. Kid is gonna be good someday. Custis is a physical specimen, but I think he has some fine tuning to do. With Brisly missing I was really impressed with Avant. He will definitely be getting time this year. I don't remember seeing Corey cooper anywhere? Anyone see him?

OL- From what I saw the 1st team OL just man handled whenever they were out there. I think we will be very good here this year. Starters for today were stated above. To be honest I didn't focus much here, we know what we got. Sorry to the big uglies.

Defense:

Line- Crume didn't scrimmage. Still a little nervous here but I think Daoust will get these guys ready. I think we were playing extra bland base D today. I remember Micah Robinson getting a little pressure from the outside on a few plays.

LB- First unit seemed to mesh ok. Really bland defensive calls. Arcinega didn't scrimmage. Kirkland appeared to have put on some mass and was still flying around. Zaire Franklin had some nice hits and was really filling the gaps up the middle. Thomas and Moskal also played well.

DB- Safeties played well. We have some depth here with Scissum and Desir. Scissum had a beautiful pass break up over the middle. Rodney Williams had some nice hits. Reddish and Whigham both played well at corner. Hopefully these guys can step it up a notch this year. Morgan also played fairly well. The new guy at the position Corey Winfield was getting picked on a little but I know he has the athleticism to be very good at this position. No freshman CB really stood out to me.

This is all just off of memory so if anyone has any questions feel free to ask. I felt the defense didn't play the greatest today but they were also keeping it really simple. It was hard to keep track of down and distance the offense was moving so fast and kept changing direction after a certain amount of time. I felt the D wasn't getting many stops but because of the change in direction it was tough for me to tell. I think we will definitely be faster paced this year. I'm excited for this season, we have athletes all over the field.

Cool tidbit. I saw a guy dressed in all Titans coach like gear. He had a notebook and stuff with him. Maybe checking out Hickey or Eskridge?

Sorry for any grammar issues, typed this on my ipad with auto correct.

GO CUSE.

Thanks, CUSU -- always great to read first hand perspectives on these scrimmages!

Thanks so much for taking the time to write up such a comprehensive summary.

Very good ! This was right on the money CUSU. Thank You. Go Cuse!

From my knowledge there were 2 NFL scouts there -- not totally sure why as it is a pretty light practice and what can you really learn from that. Nevertheless I guess the scouts have some time to come out so you might as well get the looks when you can.

Awesome recap thank you CUSU!
