Dad, why do we like Syracuse?

My kids are rabid sports fans. They will watch any game on TV, and absolutely love going to games in person.

I took them to the SU-Maryland game last season. They don't want to go back.

I realized today that my fond memories of SU football are about as moldy and nostalgic as my fond memories of Beverly Hills 90210, Nirvana and Titanic.

So, I feel ya, man.

I'm 25. I haven't seen much good football in my lifetime.

At least your ten year old has some time for us to try to get relevant where he can enjoy the game and really understand/invest into it, like all of us.

My oldest boy, 5, is just starting to get interested in sports. He has been told he can ro0t for any team he likes.

Except Georgetown. And any Philly team.

You are to be respected. Anyone under 30 with rabid interest in the program is the truest of true fans.

got kids? www.FriendsForParents.com (got a Cuse parents group on there)

as for my kid? I'm pretty happy he hasn't really watched an football games this season as the nooners conflict with his kindergarten soccer schedule

Sorry your kid kicked you in the nuts like that.

My kids are all in. We get to 1-2 games a year - from Cleveland, usually one home, one on the road. Neither has bought into the Buckeyes, which is an amazing feat, given peer pressure and our location.

It strikes me with this type of question that we're losing generations of potential fans.

I grew up in syracuse, and I have very few friends who give a shtt about syracuse football. And I can't blame them.

And I might save that post to show some of the posters here who call me out whenever I'm not posting about sunshine and flowers .

Syracuse football has lost a whole generation of fans. Anyone born between 1990 and 2005 is probably lost.

So asks my 10-year old.

In astonishment, I rattle off the teams we used to beat:

LSU
Georgia
Arizona
Ohio State
Miami
Auburn
Penn State
Clemson
Michigan

Of course, none of these in his lifetime.

#disgusted

When we ran into Gedney downtown in Winston last year before the awake game, my oldest Inquired who he was. As I was regaling him with a bunch of Chris's stats and honors, he says, "Wow, so Syracuse used to have really good players when you were growing up."

I'll give it to him, he's stuck with Syracuse. He's not the most ardent fan, but he proudly roots for them here in Carolina.

I hear ya. There is a "Lost Generation" of SU football fans. SU football has been down for so long that an entire generation of young adults now have zero interest in the program. And one 9 or 10 win season won't change that either unfortunately. It's going to take years of winning consistently to get that generation into SU football. The "die hards" for SU Football for the most part are 40-45 years of age or older and that isn't a good sign for the future. Once they give up on the program and stop going, there is no young generation to take their place in the Dome.

This is so true... I have been going for years... Almost 40 yrs old but parents had season s for me and then I bought my first seasons in 98... Have been going every year most games but most of my friends could care less... It's sad

People I work with have season tickets (a big block of great seats) and for most games they can't give them away. Most weeks they end up in the trash. They only have season tickets because they are "well to do" and money isn't an issue in their lives. They will go to the 1 big game a year vs LSU and what not. The other games they just give away to family, friends, co-workers. And for most games (not all, but almost all) nobody will take the free tickets and they just end up in the garbage can. And it's a big office I work in, not just a few people. Nobody wants Free football tickets.

Now for SU basketball tickets, I have seen grown men and women almost come to blows fighting over who gets what for what game.

Many football fans in that generation generally have a "real team" that they follow such as Notre Dame, Florida, USC, etc. They "root" for Syracuse too, but it's like they don't really even take them seriously enough to claim them and just kind've casually follow them because they're local. Sad.

And as someone who remembers the majority of the 1987-2001 run very well and have thus generally perceived Syracuse as a good football school that's just in a down period...it's alarming to think that we've now been mediocre to bad for as long as we were good in my time as a sports fan.

Same on my end

Same here. I have 4 season tickets and a 8 hour round trip that is rapidly becoming not worth it. My lnitial plan was to sell 2 tickets to offset the cost of the other two. Of course I did not take into consideration the tickets have no value! Sad

Only disagreement is that things can turn on a dime with a great season. Syracuse is a big event town. Be good and win some big games and people will turn out and turn on.

At least the Titanic eventually stopped sinking...

I hear you, my son is being raised as a Syracuse fan in the Carolina's as well, but I am to the point of feeling like I am guilting him into feeling obligated to root for SU.

Sadly, I am debating whether it is worth the trip over to Raleigh in a couple of weeks.
