i would like to see the daily orange/and post standard do a cooperative survey regarding syracuse university returning to the "orangemen" orange women or orange ladies or lady orange. i have never accepted the fact that we are the syracuse orange. i got over the saltine warrior, but still think that had we worked with the onondaga nation we could have made that work if presented properly, with dignity, and other concessions, scholarships etc. guess i'm showing my age (65). just throwing it out there

I would like to see the Saltine Warrior or something similar. If I recall correctly, it was not the Onondaga Nation that was offended but an outside group who were not Native Americans.

I still have a hard time seeing an orange beanbag chair with arms and legs as a mascot.

Otto isn't going anywhere. He is unique and recognized nationally as much as any collegiate mascot. It's one aspect of branding the University got right.

I don't think there will ever be enough public outcry to change the name back to Orangemen. They've been the Orange for about ten years. Most of us have accepted it and moved-on.

I'll sign up with them. The strong do what they can, and the weak suffer what they must -- but asking the defeated to bless their conquerers' pity is beyond the pale.

Everyone loves Otto.

Everyone. My father in law (Georgia fan) when he meant me I said I was an SU alum his reply was

"You have the BEST mascot"

It was a Native American student organization that protested.

Even Oren Lyons said that it was derogatory.
I stand corrected.
However according to the link you posted, Oren Lyons did not say that having a Native American as a mascot was offensive, he said it was all in the presentation. "Onondagan Chief Oren Lyons, a 1958 alumnus and former SU lacrosse star, explained that it's "all in the presentation...The thing that offended me when I was there was that guy running around like a nut. That's derogatory""

So back to tipphill's post, maybe it could work if it was "...presented properly, with dignity..."

Not in today's world. Daniel Snyder is constantly being bashed for the team name and logo of the Washington Redskins, he doesn't have a mascot on the sidelines and every year there is serious uproar about the team name. He is having a heck of a time just being allowed to keep the team name (that has been that for 50 years) trying to change the name back to something that could be perceived offensive, well that will never be allowed even if the intent is to be done tastefully.

Plus Otto is the best mascot in the NCAA and some of the ladies that have worn the costume are... Extra special to say the least. Well at least when I was there.

What would be the point of a dignified mascot? What could it possibly do? No antics? Sends chills down my spine.

And Otto sends chills up your spine?

FSU's Chief Osceola seems to work for them.

Frankly, I don't care who or what we have as a mascot as long as we win. I'm have fond memories the Saltine Warrior, it reminds me of attending games in Archibold with my father. We were Orangemen and Orangewomen when I graduated from SU and now we are just plain Orange and I will always root for SU.

Florida States relationship with the Seminoles; that mascot has a different role than does Otto. Ottos role is entertainment, fun and playfulness. The Seminole mascot is not seen dancing and clowning around; he does not act as a disrespectful characterization of Native American's; just what Oren Lyons was speaking about. Change is the only constant in nature; this change based-upon respect for Native American culture is, in my view, a timely one. You may prefer the past and there are some things I find myself missing many aspects our society used to be about; however 'the times they are a changin'. IMO Otto is right for Syracuse; just ask the students they love Otto.

No, I meant that a dignified mascot would send chills up my spine.

my original question was to poll folks about being called orangemen ---i gave up re the saltine warrior as in this countries climate that would not happen---i would still like to be called orangemen, orange women etc etc.i would like to see what happens if polled, and the difference from su students, and the community. i suspect the fan based community (townies), older alumni would prefer orangemen. tough to know what students think

Is it really worth the expenditure? If they want to change it they can.

I think they should change the name to the Syracuse 315ers. Kidding (?) ;)

maybe not, but we have done polls on lesser issues, how much would it possibly cost for syracuse.com to ask the question in a poll ---they do this all the time for stuff. su will not do it until asked, and given data to support it

1 - I have never used the term or considered the team to be the "Syracuse Orange". I may have yelled "Let's Go Orange" or said casually "The Orange" looked good last night. But that was just a shortening of the name. A nickname for the name like Pat instead of Patrick, or Nick instead of Nicholas. I never considered actually changing March 17th to St Pat's Day. They are and always will be the Orangemen to me.
2 - Pretty sure Otto was around way before before the name change.
3 - I have never once in my life, upon hearing the term Orangemen conjured up in my mind anything to do with American Indians. I hear Orangemen and I think about college kids playing football, basketball, lacrosse, etc running around in orange and white uniforms (and sometimes blue for some reason).
4 - I started following the team around 1978. The only Saltine Warrior I remember looked like a reject from a toga party running around with a sword.

5. People are way too sensitive today. Honestly when I hear Redskin I only think of a sports team. Live in the now not the past.
6 . Why don't we go back to Orangemen and have a bunch of guys dressed like this, pretty classy if you ask me...

I don't think that would be a toga party reject, that would be top shelf toga party material right there.
