I did not know that lots of former players were going to be there last night, but as I sat in section 104 before the game, I saw a guy walking across the floor and remarked that it sure looked like Dave Harmon. Turns out he sat about 8 rows in front of us and it was indeed him. He defined the athletic bball player in his day, but I remember him most from touch football games on Hendricks Field in front of Lawrinson. He blew everyone away. I wish the cameraman had coordinated with the announcer at halftime because it would have been nice to see what some of those guys look like now.

Dave Harmon is my neighbor. He's a great guy. A little intimidating. His son and my son are friends. I wish they had done the halftime event better. It seemed haphazard, with not enough time to give anyone the huzzahs due to them. I was disappointed. I will tell David about your post and he will be tickled.

I tried to get down to say hello to him when he returned from the halftime event, but he went the other direction. Just as well, as I am not a stalker, but I thought he would get a kick out of someone recognizing and remembering him after 40+ years.

They did a pretty lousy job with the alumni event. Rushed and haphazard is a good way to put it. Mr. Excitement fumbled over his words and mispronounced a couple of the players' names (incredibly insulting when many of them have traveled to Syracuse to be honored).

I don't know how SU does such a poor job with these things, and it's not clear to me that they're aware of what a bad job they do. Not sure which is worse.

Dave Harmon was the law at my elementary school. HW Smith, some 25 years ago. I'm not sure what his official position was but one cross look from him was enough to keep this rowdy 5th grader in line! We were all terrified of him but he kept a bunch of tough to handle kids at HW in line and as I grew older I really looked back on him with fondness and a great measure of respect.

That's exactly the extent of my Mr. Harmon memories. He was a serious chap. I'm still a bit afraid of him.

Whoever is responsible for these affairs has a long history of terrible arrangements.

About 15 years ago, Pearl had his number retired during halftime of a game. If you weren't paying very close attention, you wouldn't have had any idea that one of Syracuse's greatest players was being honored. It almost looked like someone said, "We've got 90 seconds before the next commercial, let's get it done." Very sad.

That's exactly how it looked last night. They couldn't just do without the dance team last night? They had to give them their usual routine and then squeeze in the alumni?

The athletic department should be embarrassed by their cursory treatment of the alumni and their continued thumbed nose toward the fanbase. Gross has done a very nice job with the back of house and on-field performance, but the game presentation and communications/marketing needs a major overhaul. That they're so unresponsive to concerned criticism is disappointing.

You should have seen him prowl around DeWitt! The summer my husband and son shot paint balls at him from long bamboo tubes was terrifying. Even though he couldn't see them, he knew immediately who it was. I lived in fear a long time after that. My hands are trembling as I type this.

Does he still live in Bradford Hills?

There was a long period (middle school through pretty close to high school graduation) that we didn't want to walk down your block because he was such a scary guy.

did his son go to JD?
He sure did. His senior year he helped lead the team to the final four in Glens Falls. JD lost to a team with a UConn recruit at center and a guard recruited for one the the NYC D1 schools. JD was in the game with only a few minutes to go before finally losing.

The three tri-captains of the JD squad had SAT scores, that combined, were probably higher than the total of the entire team that beat them. Matt Harmon went to Brown, Josh Greenberg went to Yale (not sure, but it was certainly Ivy League) and my son Nick (yes, I am terribly proud) went to Georgia Tech.
