DePaul Dips Into Its Past to Hire Dave Leitao (ZagsBlog)

DePaul dipped into its past to forge a path toward the future.

The school has hired former coach Dave Leitao as its new coach. He will be introduced at a press conference on Monday afternoon.

Leitao went 58-34 at DePaul from 2002-05, making two NITs and one NCAA Tournament. He then spent four years at Virginia, going 143-129 before serving as an assistant at Missouri and Tulsa under Frank Haith.

Wow you never see this - recycling an old coach. Guess if they can get any where close to the old glory days of Leitao's 63% winning percentage vs Oliver Purnell's 34% at Depaul they will consider it a big win.

I had forgotten he had that degree of success at DePaul. Not spectacular but pretty darn good considering how awful they've been recently. I think they'd consider it a major win if he came close to that again.

Depaul was in Conference USA back then. It will be interesting how he does in the Big East even though it isn't the same Big East that Oliver Purnell earned most of his record. He did have a slightly better than .500 record (.512) in the ACC at Virginia but was let go for Bennett.

In a way Coach P was a recycled coach...since UConn copies us

Leitao was in over his head at UVa... And many of the fans wish him well, but we were ready for him to be gone when he left... It was abysmal, to say the least... Both he and Pete Gillen did a great job burying UVa at the bottom of the conference for nearly a decade...

How many times has a coach left a program and boomeranged back?

I was at UVA when they hired Leitao away from DePaul. He got off to a good start at Virginia, but was fired after the winning slowed down. Tony Bennett has made Leitao's firing look like a pretty smart move, but this probably isn't a horrible hire for DePaul. Even with the new basketball stadium coming, I think that the ceiling for the program seems to be pretty low these days.

They could do worse, he did take them to the tournament. Didn't Leito take Uva to the tourney one year as a 4 seed?
