I mentioned this during the game but wanted to bring up and see if any of the X/O folks here had an opinion. After the first quarter, it felt weird to be that we were getting killed on screens, intermediate routes AND over the top. What exactly were we covering? So I focused on the DBs and saw that the CBs lined up 10 yards from the line...but then released to safeties after about 15 yards. SO, the screens were easily set up with blockers before the CBs could get there. and then the intermediate routes opened up between 15-20 yards. Why did we line up like that...and why did we keep doing it? What am I missing?

Been asking this question to myself all season. Our DB's give WR's a 5-7 yard cushion and then let the opponent run by them before turning their hips (especially #9). They played a lot of zone this past weekend and the corners were suppose to mesh with the safeties to hand off the WR. This mesh/exchange was not working because the safeties were getting sucked in on play action and were no where to be found.

Another thing I didn't understand was trying to match our OLB's on their slot WR's. There was no way that our OLBs could cover them. When we brought Morgan in with the nickel package and played more man, (Like the third quarter) we played ten times better. I think we have to play nickel more considering the passing attacks in the ACC.

you have to give up something . Im not sure that every WR they have is not faster than our DB's, so we cant press consistently . Same on there end, press tight all game if they cant run by you.. Safety can play run if he isnt worried abut a deep ball.. we threw deep 3-4 times and never got close to getting behind anyone.

Man coverage would have taken care of most of that but when you have man coverage your db's have thier backs to the qb, which against a running qb like Boyd means he could be across the line of scrimage before anyone knew he was taking off. Most DC's will play zone coverage on a running QB. My guess is the coaches just chose the lesser of two evils. They made Boyd beat them with his arm and he did.

if the safety doesnt blow 3-4 coverages most of the issues go away and so do the big plays that killed us. we slowed down the run, kept the QB from running most of the game, and had 2 INT's . Home run balls hurt us and they were not on all out pressure plays which makes it hurt even more.

It seems like new coaches and scheme have taken more or less the same group of guys and made them worse. I'm concerned.

Is Bullough running the same basic scheme that Shafer did? Does he have a different defensive "playbook?"

I don't think it's the same playbook.

Eskridge blew the tackle on Humphries on his 2nd TD. That kills my theory of just having the safeties line up at the back line so they won't get beat deep. Thought I was onto something.

that clemson game provided enuf footage for a 3 day bad coverage clinic. and not only blown coverage but poor tackling angles by the dbs as well. jeeesh.
and if keon lyn is gone well then we're driving home rush hour with the front windshield spraypainted black.
