I took a deep dive into the stats to see how we compared to big, bad Wake Forest. So here is everything on this page: NCAA College Football FBS current team Stats | NCAA.com SCORING OFFENSE SU- 27 WF- 37 TOTAL OFFENSIVE YARDS SU- 348 WF- 438 OFFENSIVE FIRST DOWNS SU- 192 WF- 246 OFFENSIVE RUSHING YARDS SU- 144 WF- 128 OFFENSIVE PASSING YARDS SU- 204 WF- 310 OFFENSIVE PASSING YARDS PER COMPLETION SU- 13 WF- 14 OFFENSIVE PASSING EFFICIENCY SU- 140 WF- 162 OFFENSIVE COMPLETION PERCENTAGE SU- 60 WF- 63 OFFENSIVE 3RD AND 4TH DOWN PERCENTAGE SU- 25 WF- 46 OFFENSIVE RED ZONE POINTS SU- 165in36 = 5 WF- 234in51 = 5 SACKS ALLOWED SU- 31 WF- 29 TACKLES FOR A LOSS ALLOWED SU- 61 WF- 59 BLOCKED KICKS ALLOWED SU- 2 WF- 2 (I’m assuming blocked kicks are placekicks and added them to blocked punts) SCORING DEFENSE SU- 20 WF- 28 TOTAL DEFENSIVE YARDS SU- 318 WF- 395 DEFENSIVE FIRST DOWNS SU- 179 WF- 199 DEFENSIVE RUSHING YARDS SU- 150 WF- 142 DEFENSIVE PASSING YARDS SU- 168 WF- 253 DEFENSIVE PASSING EFFICIENCY SU- 121 WF- 138 DEFENSIVE COMPLETION PERCENTAGE SU- 62 WF- 57 DEFENSIVE THIRD AND FOURTH DOWN PERCENTAGE SU- 39 WF- 41 DEFENSIVE RED ZONE POINTS SU- 132in31 = 4 WF- 168in41 = 4 SACKS SU- 23 WF- 24 TACKLES FOR A LOSS SU- 61 WF- 68 BLOCKED KICKS SU -2 WF- 1 DEFENSIVE TOUCHDOWNS SU- 3 WF- 1 KICKOFF RETURNS SU- 26 WF- 21 OPPONENT KICKOFF RETURNS SU- 22 WF- 19 KICKOFFS THAT WERE RETURNED SU- 10/44 = 23% WF - 14/53 = 26% OPPONENT KICKOFFS THAT WERE RETURNED SU- 20/56 = 36% WF – 39/68 = 57% PUNT RETURNS SU- 6 WF- 6 OPPONENT PUNT RETURNS SU- 9 WF- 10 PUNTS RETURNED SU- 12/29 = 41% WF - 13/35 = 37% NET PUNTING SU- 36 WF- 39 FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGE SU- 12/13 = 92 WF - 9/12 = 75% LONGEST FG SU- 54 WF- 48 40 YARDS + SU- 3/4 WF- 4/5 EXTRA POINTS MISSED SU- 0 WF- 0 TURNOVER MARGIN SU- +7 WF- -4 PENALTIES SU- 84/637yds WF - 50/430yds TIME OF POSSESSION SU- 27.8 WF- 28.5 STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE SU- #34 WF #38 (Everybody has their own system for this: I averaged the sources on this page: NCAA College Football Strength of Schedule Rankings & Ratings COMMON OPPONENTS: We beat Louisville 31-7: WF lost to them 21-48 We beat NC State 24-9; WF lost to them 21-30 We lost to Clemson 21-27; WF lost to them 45-51 in 2OT We lost to Florida State 3-38; WF beat then 31-21 I looked at that and there is what it tells me that seems to be in Wake Forest’s favor: - We are converting 25.1% of our 3rd and 4th downs. Wake is converting 45.5% - Wake has gone for it one fourth down 27 times and made it 14 times. We’ve done that 8 times and were successful 3 times. - Wake Forest players have much better discipline: 50 penalties to 84 for us. - Wake has 54 more first downs. - Wake is getting 106 more yards passing per game. - Both teams have scored an average of 4.58 points when entering the red zone but Wake has entered it 51 times to our 36. - We’re supposed to be the good defensive team but Wake is giving up fewer rushing yards per game: 142-150. - Wake had 7 more TFLs and 2 more sacks than we do. - Wake scored 10 points per game more than we do. - Their passing efficiency is 22 points better than ours. - Wake gains 90 more yards per game. Our advantages: - Our opponents are converting 38.6% of their 3rd and 4th down plays. Wake’s opponents are converting 41.3%. But that’s much less than Wake’s offensive advantage, (above). - We’ve given up 20 fewer first downs but, again that’s a much smaller difference than Wake’s offensive advantage, above. - We are +7 on takeovers. They are -4. But turnovers are the most erratic of statistics, as Wake found out when they had 8 of them vs. Louisville. - 36% of our kickoffs are returned but 57% of Wake’s kickoffs are returned. Go Trebor! - We are averaging 35.95 net yards gained per punt, 115th in the country. Wake is 39.08, 56th. - Wake is giving up 84 more yards passing per game. But can we pass? - We are out-rushing Wake by 16 yards per game but we need to be averaging more than 144 yards per game. - We give up 8 points a game less than they do. - Sour defensive passing efficiency is 18 points better than theirs. - We give up 77 fewer yards per game. Of course, our statistics are mostly from a time when we were reasonably healthy. Now we have problems at quarterback, in both lines, the secondary and a lot of guys who will play but will play hurt. Wake Forest’s no doubt has some problems, too, (it’s the 10th game), but I doubt they are as serious as ours.
