Defense steps up big

With the exception of some elite teams there is so little defense in college football. You gotta score and you gotta get a few key stops. Wish we were better defensively, don’t get me wrong, but we got the key stops late and won a shootout.

Two of the three big pass plays were safeties playing cover 2 biting on play action.

Like you said, Robinson was a free rusher. The kid is also extremely talented. If the tackle picks up the block Finley likely drops a strike into soft coverage there and extends the drive. The defense is likely playing with fire and gasoline.

Crowd deserves lots of credit to, It was deafening at end of game. When it gets that loud it gives are players more energy I think.

If you watch the replay, the tackle was late out of his stance. It was like we wasn't expecting the snap.

NCS averaged 2.3 per rush and that with only 1 sack for -6. That is a huge improvement.

Finley was only sacked 3 times all year he knows when to get rid of the ball or slide around to avoid the sack

Yep, and even though we didn't officially sack him very much he got hit a ton. It showed in his body language. Didn't look like a guy that was really excited about going back on the field.

I often think crowds(not just Cuse, but everywhere) wait too long to get loud. They wait until the teams are lined up. They should be deafening in between plays so they can’t hear in the huddle and can’t hear the signals.

Finley was getting the ball out quick and our blitzes were coming from too far away. On a bunch of big plays, watch our blitzer - they are barely passed the LOS when Finley throws it.

Let's not forget NCST's oline is arguably the best O-Line in the ACC. Finley hasn't got sacked because nobody has been able to get to him.

Other than the last play the only time we got pressure was when we blitzed 1 or 2 LBs and we didn't get there consistently even when we did blitz.

I think the thought process on rushing 3 was "if we can't get there with 5, we might as well rush 3 and use those extra 2 in coverage."

He was half running for his life in the first quarter when we blitzed a lot. We may not have gotten sacks but he was definitely under a lot of pressure and his passing showed it. He got hit a lot. Seems like we stopped blitzing after the first quarter giving him more time and he got much more productive.
