With Jones, PT, and Graham leaving (for various reasons), Harris' career over, Lemon coming off of surgery, Sales status TBD, there will be very few Seniors on next years roster.

Right now, aside from Lemon and Sales the seniors will be,

Sharpe, Goggins on the DL, Vaughan and Diabate at LB, Thomas at DB, Chibane on the OL, Stevens at TE, Nassib at QB, and Cutler at FB, Lichenstein at PK.

10 to 12 4th and 5th year seniors next year. The 4th year Juniors next year will be Pugh, Anderson, Loeb, Alexander and Phillips, and I don't think you would request any of those guys to take their degrees and leave.

Up to 17 4th and 5th year players (three of the them JUCO transfers) on the 85 man roster next year.

This situation causes two major problems, leadership/experience next season and it limits the number of openings for the 2013 recruiting cycle, which the staff believes they are finally ahead of the curve on.

Some hard decisions will have to be made about filling the final 3, 4, 5 spots left on the roster this year or leaving them open for next year.

I don't see how Loeb isn't a candidate to take his degree and go make some more Youtube workout videos.

I believe Cory Boatman is returning in 2012. He was not listed among the graduating Seniors against Cinci.

I don't know how I missed that, you're right.

Makes you wonder if some 3rd year Juniors on the 2012 roster won't be asked back, but I guess it would depend on how important a role, if any, they play on special teams. Thinking Tull, Coker, Flemming would be the only 3 possibilities.

You would think so, but if they were going to leave you would think it would be this year, they all have 3 to play 2 available to them and wouldn't have to go 1-AA, they could still transfer to MAC or CUSA schools if they wanted to still play D-1.

Isn't Chibane a 4th year JR?

Junior Year (2011): Started all 12 games

Sophomore Year (2010): Started all 13 games

Freshman Year (2009): Played in 11 games, primarily on special teams

He had a few snaps his true freshman year, can't remember if they were on specials or with the OL, but definitely some minor participation.

Edited: I guess not minor if it was in 11 games.

It looks like we will be lucky to open up 15 slots for next year's class. That sucks.

Not that he is a big loss but why play any OLmen on STs knowing it takes a while for OL to develop. That is the one position that NEEDS to RS.

We needed OL bodies on the PAT and punting teams. Didn't have the luxury of redshirting him in 2009.

It probably helped his development since he'll end up as a 3 year starter.

That depends on how you look at it. Two years ago, people were freaking out that the 25 schollie limit wouldn't allow us to get to 85 on the roster. Now, we will have 85, although I'm willing to bet that you get a few more on your list that don't make it another year, just from the natural attrition - injuries, academics, discipline, etc.

At this time last year, folks were saying the same thing about this year's class. You just never know how things will shake out over the next 12 months.

Depends on how we finish: Johnson (check) Morgan or Standifer, Zian Jones

Then on to 2013 where we apparently have landed a QB to start things off. We are still involved with some high regarded QBs so one can assume the possible loss of Miller, Loeb, Kinder (unless position change) from that position alone

Go--one thing that is impossible to forecast right now is natural roster attrition. A couple of players might have issues due to grades, one or two might decide to transfer in search of more bountiful PT, another couple might choose to walk away from football for various reasons. Happens every year.

At the end of the day, I'd expect the number of vacancies we have for the class of 2013 to approach 20 or more--which is a much more useful number from the standpoint of roster balance.

Go- Your write up makes my very optimistic for 2013 and 2014 but very pessimistic for 2012. There will be very little leadership and that was 2011 teams problem.

I am also sure that more schollies will open up, but not enough to get to 25 next year. I am hoping for twenty, and a very good twenty.

I assume you meant the 2010 teams' strength? or the 2011 teams' problem?

But I agree, that's a big concern for 2012. One thing that could help is knowing that so many of them went through the 5 game losing streak, so that will be motivation for everyone to keep focused, and for whoever our senior captains end up being, to speak up when they need to.

You are right. I meant 2011 not 2010. my bad. But lets hope you are right. I think Chandler would have helped...

All you need is a core of 2-3 good leaders to set the tone...trust me.

Kids aren't stupid...they might see what was done this year (leadership wise) and figure out they need to be more dedicated.

Loeb had a strong year as the holder on special teams. Kid might never see the field at QB [never say never, I suppose], but he's a key contributor on special teams which warrants him sticking around.
