Denver/UVA and even Duke to an extent have really hit the Canadian player pool hard over say the last 5-10 years, Syracuse on other hand sort of shifted its energy into locking down pretty much all of New York outside of NYC/LI and started a national recruiting strategy hence the players from Chicago, Oregon, Florida, Philly, Texas etc.  Another issue that I think plays a role is SU has been one of the few big time powers to shy away from extremely early recruiting that teams like JHU, UNC, and UVA now live by. 
Also SU has tried to get back into the Island a lot more the past few years, the results have been mixed but I think it was the right call as were getting killed down there and to be honest in some areas we still are but slowly you are seeing an Su re-assurgence and the mystique of an SU offer return.  Between the Island, Upstate and the Canadian/Indian territories somethign had to give, and due to the issues we had with Jerome Thompson, Kent Squires Hill, the younger Thompsons, and a few other highly skilled native players I think Desko and Co decided to pick adn choose those battles more carefully as we were wasting a lot of time and effort with little in return.
