It just occurred to me this will be the first time that DFB will be going into a season with upperclassmen that are in their 3rd year in the system and SC program. I wonder if this will help in 2 ways, the first one is obvious but the second point may be less so.

1. Obviously the third year in the system should more natural and effecient for a player than in the first/second, so they should be more instinctual and “play faster”.

2. The upperclassman may be able to help “coach up” the underclassman since they are now (hopefully) approaching mastery of the system. This should amplify the coaching effort for the younger guys. The past couple years the coaches had to spend a significant amount of time with the whole team with no support from “veterans”.

It will be interesting on the second point if we hear any quotes to this effect from players/coaches. “Not only does coach have to spend less time with me but I can also help out youngster x with stuff I was trying to learn a couple years ago from coach”

I think we are all sleeping on his 2nd year, midway through things “click” ... but then he backtracked a little and said year 3.

I would not be surprised to see the O really put it all together.

Experience in the system is critical. With this being ED's 3rd year and experience on the OL, the system had better click. I think it will (we have seen evidence of that sporadically the first 2 seasons).

2 other factors in my mind that are equally as important as the above. 1 is the uptick in talent. 2 is the impact of the S&C program.

We are closing the size, speed, strength, talent gap (and this gap was huge, imo). That should make a difference.

She lives in Canada. Met her at Niagara Falls. You wouldn’t know her.
Are you talking about Lola again?

Yes, DINO will be year 3 with his guys but its hard to ignore the fact he lost his entire backing corps as well as his top 2 receivers in the off season. Yes, they were old regime guys but dino made them better and those are 5 huge spots to replace.

The lack of returning production at WR gives me pause and of course replacing the linebackers but a more veteran team across the board makes me think we’ll be better than last year.

Absolutely , the OL gelling should be the foundation for the O.

That’s college football though and a huge majority of the core is back.

LB is a legit concern, but the front and back four on D are back and deeper for the most part.

WR in this system can be more plug-and-play than most. It made stars out of guys who weren’t stars. I don’t worry much at all there except having that one guy that can stretch a D vertically which we haven’t had the first two years (sorry to Riley.)
OL is leaps and bound better. This is Best we have felt about the QB position this century. We didn’t lose any material RBs.

Gotta think we compete much better in November and should have a strong shot at 6-6.

Feels like the first time, like it's never felt before.

Now, we get a chance to see Dino and what he and his staff have in store for us fans. I'm pretty excited to see how they develop these young men into their system and after 2019 this baby should be rocking. It has to be nice for Dino too...to get players into his system and to adjust the kinks to what type of direction he wants to go and thus we at SU will be the first ones to see what he has as a HC as not only a fixer but a builder.

It’s an unknown. But unknowns are just that - sometimes - you get your recruits in after 2 years in the system and it works in your favor.

In fact, I think we’ll be as good at both spots as last year </hot take>

Great point about experience going into year 3. Progression as a unit was slowed due to Dungey missing games the last two years. LB is the only concern for me but I think our D line will help with the that. I also think the staff will rotate more LB's throughout the game. LB packages will keep guys more heathier going into November. I am not worried as much about WR. This is a situation where the system makes the players. We will actually be faster there with both johnson's on the field along with Butler and Pierce. I also think Hendrix will have the same impact Ish had his freshman year.

Good points. The DE unit is now a strength when it was a weakness in 2016 and a question mark in 2017. Babers believes this defense will be improved.

The offense should be more balanced and less predictable, led by a senior QB and a more experienced OL. We lose our two best receivers -- we have a net gain in experience in the 9 other positions.

If we are trending in the right directions we should be able to replace non NFL LB"s and receivers without too much of a glitch. All made great contributions here and all made some plays, but none were next level talents.

I really hate to agree with this statement because of how much those players contributed over 4 years and how well they represented the program/school.

But if we are being honest, you are absolutely right. There are very few (good) programs that are lamenting the loss of a bunch of players that didnt get drafted.
