In NC, Charlotte area, there are many relocated fans already down here for various reasons. There are also quite a few in the Raleigh area as well. So, they really don't have to "travel" that far depending on where exactly. I went to the Wake game a few weeks back in Winston Salem and it was loaded with 'Cuse fans. We made the trek up from Charlotte, roughly 100 miles, so no big deal. Also, there are many 'ol Syracusans that reside in Florida permanently or snowbirds, so same thing in regards to travel. This is really the case up and down the East coast for the most part. Since Syracuse is relatively a smaller private vs. state school, but bears the city's name, so many of its fans are from the Syracuse area, or have ties to Central NY that are not actual alumni.
