Dion sought JB's approval before entering draft

Glad to hear he sought JB's input before he pulled the trigger. I'm sure he must have had a pretty good idea what his coach would say, but it was a smart move none the less. Was really happy about the very last part of the article. Lets hope he carries through on this.
Waiters also said he intends to finish his courses at Syracuse this semester.
“I’m going to take care of school and take care of my classes,’’ he said. “I’ll do the things I need to do.’’

It would be interesting to know if JB discussed the school/classes issue with Dion.

Finishing this semester is big. Hope he does it!

I respect Waiters for all that he has done and said but once scouts start asking him to go here or there and he's jumping all over the place it's going to be hard to keep up with his classes. I hope I'm wrong and this stupid APR thing (the way it's implemented) shouldn't interfere with a kid that will be getting paid millions in October.

but it looks like the cattle has learned what to say, when not giving me a championship.

Oh Lord

He definitely did. In the press conference where he was talking about APR he spoke about how he selfishly tries to get them to finish their semester. With us now potentially being borderline it has to be a huge focus, but sadly it is still in the athlete's hand when all is said and done and they potentially can control our ability to be eligible for future tourneys unless changes happen.

To all those who whined and chewed out Dion being selfish and not thinking of the APR, shhhhhhhhhhhhh...

Good luck, Dion.

Well, when asked, I promised my wife I'd put the dishes in the dishwasher and take clothes out of the dryer last night. I had no intention of doing so but at 9:30, that was the answering I was going with...

Good luck Dion. Hoping you do well and represent yourself, your family and SU in the NBA. Doesn't it say he left for Philly Monday though? Somehow I still don't think academics and its effect on SU's APR is one of his priorities. Hope I'm wrong

How do we know he is not doing it? Some people saying he is not attending classes?

SU people know the NCAA is taking the APR seriously. SU needs to watch the numbers. They look to have their eye out on this.

A big first step in that is to have Dion publicly state he is finishing. Dion just said it! If he didn't say that SU would be in trouble.

The second step is to help get him the grades. These are not upper level biology courses here. He just needs passing grades in the cake courses he is taking. There could be allowances by the teachers to account for Dion's travels and prep time. UK does it all the time, SU should be able to do it on occasion.

Dion realizes that all he needs to do now to help keep his good standing as an alum is to pass what is needed for SU for the APR. He sees the pipeline of Alums that are all around - he can easily join that crowd. It would help facilitate the joining of the alum if he leaves in good standing. It is not something he has to do, but it is something that he realizes helps the program. Looks like he is going to try and that is big.

Going with the cousin thing ( which I know has been debunked) that family does a great job of using the college experience to grow and mature.

I was thinking about this as I was driving back from Boston on Sunday morning. Dion is very fortunate to have a great support group in his family and friends. As someone who has "Adult" (early 20's who think they know everything) children, I would do this as a staff to ensure Dion puts the work in these next couple of months:

I would call Dion's Mom and Scoop's Grandmother and ask both of them to help out the University (as well as Dion since education is always good) one last time by having them constantly ask him how the school work is going. I mean everytime they talk to him. Guilt is a good tool (especially with boys) when it comes from a Mom or surrogate Gramdma (I'm 43 and my Mom still gets me that way). ;)

Next I would get Scoop in the office and get Ricky and Antonio Sr. on a confernce call and ask all 3 of them for help in making sure Dion completes his work. Those 3 seem to bleed Orange so I dont think that will be too much of an issue. Plus, as men, these 3 can really apply some peer pressure.

Dion will probably hate them for a couple of months but in the long run, he should apprieciate it (as well as us Cuse fans).

As stated earlier, Dion is so very lucky that he has family/friends that really have his best interests in mind, not a lot of kids can say that in his position.

I'm just really confused because there is a Sgt Cuse and a SgtCuse in this thread.

Huh, good catch.

I don't know, if you're Dion, not sure this is going to matter, but since some scouts may have character questions, it could only help him to finish up the semester and seem more responsible. If you're in the middle of the draft, or at the end of the first round, every style point counts when you're going against guys who are your equals in most other regards.

I'm all for Dion doing whatever if necessary to maximize his draft value. But I'm not so sure the character thing is all that important to NBA teams unless the issues are extreme. The problems Dion had last year seem behind him, so I think he just needs to demonstrate he is willing to continue to work hard on the court to improve things like his shooting mechanics and handle.

I can't believe the admins let that slide. I was here first!

At least he's a decent poster. It's not like the guy going off on IthacaMatt for what IthacaBarrell said.

But still, I may have to consider my options. Maybe it's time to promote myself, something like a Captain may be in order.

Assuming he finishes his course-work, it is going to be really easy for me to root for Waiters in the NBA. Hell, I might even watch some regular season NBA games now...

hey, dig yer new profile pic - that album is one of my favs
Thanks. Couldn't make a change during the run, but it was time for something new. Love those guys, all incredible talents. Maybe I'll just put a different album cover in there every few weeks. :)

Actually, I think it is. Jonny Flynn, for instance, shot up the draft board based on his interviews. People LOVED him in his interviews. Made a big difference.

Although I don't recall hearing commentary on it, I think Wes probably helped himself a lot by being articulate, humble and coming across as a no-ego team player. Too bad he isn't a bit more assertive because I think it would help him be a better player.

Yeah, I was concerned at first but he checked out okay. It certainly could have been a lot worse. :)

And that promotion is definitely in order -- you've been fighting the good fight all season.

SGM Cuse would be way more bad ass

Agree, I think I wore the "Stagefright" album out. Thank god for MP3s, they don't wear out or collect dust, snaps, pops..
