This is so disturbing and disappointing. Letter from the vice chancellor this morning:

THURSDAY, AUG. 20, 2020
Dear Students:
Last night, a large group of first-year students selfishly jeopardized the very thing that so many of you claim to want from Syracuse University—that is, a chance at a residential college experience. I say this because the students who gathered on the Quad last night may have done damage enough to shut down campus, including residence halls and in-person learning, before the academic semester even begins.
Make no mistake, there was not a single student who gathered on the Quad last night who did not know and understand that it was wrong to do so. Instead, those students knowingly ignored New York State public health law and the provisions of the Syracuse University Stay Safe Pledge. Even more selfish and unsettling is how the actions of those students willfully undercut the efforts of those who have worked tirelessly over the summer to set the conditions for the continuation of residential learning. Even more selfish and unsettling is how the actions of those students may prevent our seniors from claiming their final year of college on our residential campus. Even more selfish and unsettling is how the actions of those students could force a situation where some of their classmates may have to vacate the most safe and stable and supportive living situation they have ever known.
A full investigation of last night’s incident is underway. The Department of Public Safety is reviewing security camera video from the Quad, and individuals that can be identified will be immediately referred to the student conduct process.
All this said, I want you to understand right now and very clearly that we have one shot to make this happen. The world is watching, and they expect you to fail. Prove them wrong. Be better. Be adults. Think of someone other than yourself. And also, do not test the resolve of this university to take swift action to prioritize the health and well-being of our campus and Central New York community.
Sincerely,
J. Michael Haynie
Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives and Innovation

Their actions will affect decisions on other college campus' in NYS as well.

I don’t get it. What was the impetus for the gathering?

Or did X number of people spontaneously decide to stand near each other on the quad for no clear reason?

“Meeting new people”

Honestly we’re lucky they didn’t just pick an off campus house to jam 300 of them into and party at.

We are currently living in the United States of Selfish Residents
Tragic, but true.

The “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” America is dead. It has been trampled by both political extremes and all age groups.

It‘s tragic to see it on the SU campus. An untold many probably had a significant life opportunity swept away from them over nothing but callus indifference and selfishness.

werent all first year students tested when arriving on campus? Next time they want to group gather tell them they can do the gathering but everyone is going into the saliva pool

Welp

No offense but if you're not smart enough to realize by now that just because you tested negative one day means nothing as to whether you are still negative even 48 hours later when living in a dorm environment then are you qualified to be student a Syracuse?

The one thing I'll say is that most of these same kids were probably told last May that it's totally cool to go out and gather and protest for justice for George Floyd.

I agree with you but it appears that SU itself may not fall under the "smart enough" category as they are the group that released the data. I am in the camp that refuses to blame the students - SU and every other college created this when they allowed football and therefore had to have students - they made the decision and have to live with the consequences that include young adults acting like knuckleheads.

Same camp. Believing that you can change human nature with zoom meetings and letters? I find that thinking "magical." There will be a certain percentage that will do whatever they want. Human Nature.

I feel more like I'm watching the Darwin Award Olympics, with administrators that actually think they can stop a virus, competing for top prize. Could easily go down as the dumbest decisions of the century.

Syracuse University currently reporting just 10 active cases

Good... looks like testing all the kids upfront worked.

I tend to agree the everyone is reading too much into the upfront spikes. Of course there are going to be a lot of infections coming in when you have kids from all over an area congregating into one campus. The key is going to be in a month or so are we going to be seeing infection rates that are higher than the general population. If we do, then the schools will have to go remote, if we don't then the school can stay open. I think its naive to expect zero infections.. we just need to make sure kids aren't in any more danger at school than at home.

Open up to justify the huge price tag, act fake surprised that young healthy people under no threat who are isolated from their families have parties, keep the money, blame the kids
