What Happened: Hopkins 11, Syracuse 10 (OT)
Takeaway: A year ago in the Carrier Dome the score was tied at 10 in the fourth quarter when Ryan Brown of Hopkins got a clean 12-yard look at the cage. His shot was saved, the ball went the other way, ‘Cuse scored and went on to win 13-10. Fast forward to Saturday at Homewood Field, 24 ticks of the clock left, 10-9 Orange, and Brown has a clean look again. This time he sticks it, his only tally of the game, to force overtime, where the Blue Jays got a Wilkins Dismuke rebound goal to score a huge win in brutal weather conditions. On a day when Brown (1G, 1A) and Shack Stanwick (2A) were held in check, the midfield stepped up for the Blue Jays. Drew Supinski (2G) and Cody Radziewicz (3G) were dangerous and productive. With three top middies (Joel Tinney, Connor Reed, and Alex Concannon) not available to play in 2016 it was time for this core to step up and make plays. They did just that. Other bright spots for Hopkins: First, defenseman Nick Fields was superb on potential Player of the Year Dylan Donahue (1, 2), keeping the Orange offensive conductor under wraps. Next, face-off man Hunter Moreland went 7-of-12 against Williams, including a win at the end of regulation and a win in overtime that kept the Blue Jays in possession of the ball.

Bonus Takeaway: With leads of 4-0, 7-4 at half, and 10-8 with just over six minutes left in the game, the Orange had several opportunities to close the home team, minus their head coach, out. That never happened as Syracuse got sloppy, committing costly turnovers and getting too aggressive on defense. Face-off man Ben Williams was exceptional throughout but got two early violations on the third period that altered his approach. His third violation led to a Hopkins EMO late in the game. Syracuse would not see the ball again as Hopkins tied the game and won the next two face-offs. But Williams was dominant early and gave his team a chance to put Hopkins away. The offense did not take capitalize as they had in previous wins. As a result, Syracuse let one get away from them on the road.
