What Happened: Syracuse claimed the ACC Championship
The tight race in the ACC in 2016 shows that the margin from team to team is as slim as it has ever been. This notion was highlighted with the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds winning on Friday to advance to the title game on Sunday. No. 4 Syracuse stifled a North Carolina offense for the second time this season en route to a 10-7 win. In the nightcap, Duke became the second team in two weeks to erase a four goal second half deficit to topple Notre Dame, this one in overtime. The Tar Heels are now on the bubble for an at-large berth to make the 18 team NCAA Tournament field, while Notre Dame is in. Both have issues; UNC needs to find game to game consistency, while the Irish need to examine how to fix the deficiencies on defense and find scoring in the midfield from someone not named Sergio Perkovic.
Syracuse has found defensive continuity late in the season. After a three-hour weather delay, the Orange claimed their second consecutive ACC Championship with a 14-8 decision over Duke. The delay started with the Orange leading 9-8 with just over seven minutes to play. When play resumed on a turf field nearby Syracuse it was all Orange as they scored the game’s final five goals. Goalie Evan Molloy was terrific, making 13 saves on the day. Molloy has been a steadying influence on the defense since gaining the starting nod a few weeks ago. The Syracuse defense isn’t sliding as recklessly as it had been early in the season, showing more discipline and patience. An example of the discipline- Syracuse committed only one penalty against the Blue Devils, an emotion slash from Nick Mariano. Syracuse looks like they are playing their cleanest lacrosse at the right time.
