What Happened: Syracuse nipped Army 9-8
Takeaway: The new-look Orange is now 3-0 after a tough Dome win over the Black Knights. It is never easy for Syracuse when they play Army; four of the last five meetings had been decided by three goals or less, including a win by Army in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Sunday was no different as Syracuse faced adversity on two occasions. After stretching a two-goal lead to four under a minute into the third quarter, the Orange saw the Black Knights cut the deficit to one in less than six minutes. Later in the game, Army tied the score with 4:38 to play, erasing a two-goal lead by Syracuse. It was gut-check time for the Orange, and they responded with a Tim Barber tally, his only point of the game, to reclaim the lead that stood up after the final Army effort hit the pipe and time expired. This is a gutsy win by a young team that had won comfortably in its first two games of the season. Granted the Orange has gotten it done in the friendly confines of the Carrier Dome, but that is just what this young team needed to get some wins and gain confidence. Defensively Syracuse has been solid, giving up fewer than seven goals a contest. New keeper Warren Hill is energetic and unorthodox, something the Orange faithful adore. Perhaps no team lost more on O than Cuse from a year, but the cupboard is far from bare. Dylan Donahue (1, 1), held in check by Army, continues his evolution into an elite player. Nick Mariano (1G) fits in well after transferring from UMass. Support from players like Sergio Salcido (2G) and Derek DeJoe (2G) provide balance and depth that is essential for a team coming together. Having a weapon like face-off man Ben Williams (71% on season) will get this offense extra touches; they just need to capitalize on those and not squander opportunities.
