NIL just makes it worth as far as the bling bling eye catcher mentality. Ever since I read about Ishaq’s dad talking about his “brand” 10 years ago it really changed the way I looked at recruiting. The only way we compete with any regularity for that level of blue chip talent now is to be consistently ranked and relevant on the national stage. The whole atmosphere has changed so dramatically over the past 20 years. This may not be popular but to put it on paper: 1) Geographically we aren’t special. We’re not So Cal or South Beach. 2) City size we aren’t special, we’re not Chicago, NYC or LA. 3) Natural recruiting territory we aren’t special, we’re not in Texas, Florida, California, Georgia, etc. Hell, the best recruiting grounds in NYS are 4.5 hours away from Syracuse and geographically located closer by car to 3 or 4 other P5 programs. 4) Academically we are special with some programs, but on the whole we are not Duke, Stanford, Northwestern etc 5) Tradition is not existent while our only real tradition is held hostage by a grumpy 80 year old and someone’s grandson who may not even be able to walk on here. 6) The Dome was a novelty for a while, but it really doesn’t compare 3/4 full to a Big 10 or SEC game with 100k in the stands. I hate saying this because I’m not trying to beat up the program, the school or the area but it’s the truth and that’s why recruiting high level talent is so difficult here especially when we’re a losing program. We have to win and be nationally relevant to attract top 250 national recruits with any regularity.
