put athletes on the program or posters? Can they get paid for post game interviews?

Part of the problem with how the NCAA got dragged, kicking and screaming into this - is that nothing was figured out ahead of time

Can players seek speaking engagements and get paid for them? And will coaches have any control over who players speak with? Do shoe contracts signed by coaches now need to cut the players in on the action? Can players wear their own gear with corporate sponsors on them?

has anyone ever seen the language in the full scholarship and what it entails? Are they required to do non athletic activities on behalf of the university?

To me, the people to watch are the cheerleaders and the mascots (maybe even the Citrus Society). They are ones who get zero money scholarship wise and will look to really maximize their earning power since they are paying the full vig to go to school and have something they can offer advertisers now. I bet the pep band could make decent scratch playing weddings as the pep band or even playing at the minor league games in town.

I'm also very curious how the attractive females are able to utilize their s*x appeal locally too. it sells and i suspect many of the female athletes are on minimal scholarships aside from the hoops team.

It's all going to be very interesting.

Those people not on scholarship were never restricted from earning on their own

Everything will be able increasing one’s brand.
Image over performance.

Yeah definitely. These kids don’t care about playing professionally or playing in front of millions of people during March madness anymore. It’s all going to be about getting another $500 to push XO Taco on Instagram.

Why should schools be allowed to use images of their athletes without compensating them for that?

Players get a scholarship to play. That scholarship doesn’t cover everything the school can do with that player.

The school can’t make scholarship athletes do appearances for the school.
So they shouldn’t be allowed to use their images without their consent and/or compensating them for it.

That is just standard business.

Uhhhhh you kind of have to perform well to make endorsement money.
These are kids. The concept of long-term image development and preservation will be lost on most of them. It will be… “How can I be more noticeable? Stand out individual? How do I get on SportsCenter highlights? How do I get mine?”

That's something. And last I knew the government considered 18 year olds adults.

You're way overthinking this. These kids want to make the NBA and NFL.

This is really making a few of you guys lose your minds.

Yes and no. The NCAA had strict rules if it was related to your sport. But nothing stopped you from working at McDonald's.

I asked earlier and not sure its been answered but on the flip side can the school charge the athlete to wear any SU gear at an appearance or commercial? If I wanted to wear a Cuse uniform in a commercial I would have to pay no?

Remember the UVa player on the bench making s----y faces before Malachi single-handedly beat them?

It's not difficult to envision a scenario in which that type of non-contributor is incentivized to engage in more camera hog behavior as a result of the new rules.

One can argue whether that's a bad thing or not.

I'm with All4SU. I don't like it. Didn't like the narcissistic bench behavior before the players could profit from it, won't like it afterward either.

Sounds like good potential for an NFT.

I'm just not about telling kids they can't make money. It's about as un American as it gets for me.

Pretty on-brand for me TBH.

Not really. My employer can use my image in internal or external communications and owns the IP connected to what I do while there. I’m guessing that level of licensing is connected within the scholarship. We’ll see how it shakes out, though. Could be that additional language needs to be added.

If your premise is that I’m wrong because I have lost my mind, I suppose we could debate that. Of course, most of the pertinent documents are protected under Doctor/patient confidentiality.

As far as how NIL laws will affect the performance of “kids” in college sports - yes the may have reached they age of consent, but they are still kids in the maturity sense - well, I think that’s clearly open for debate. My opinions, are based on years of watching athletes, amateur as well as professional, and how they differ. It’s true many will be “professional” in their approach to their sport and their long-term objectives to make the NFL or the NBA or the whatever. But IMO, an increasing number will decide to allow “personality” or “flamboyance” or even “controversial nature” to dictate how they brand themselves. And then there is the question of a selfish desire to pad one’s own stats. You don’t have to look far in the NFL to see that. Coming soon to college sports!

And when does it start? Can’t a high school athlete now start “building his brand?”
It’s another step down the wrong road, masked by the argument of fairness and good intentions. And we all know where good intentions take you.

Perhaps it’s just a generational thing. I’m sure I’m much older than you. God knows my kids and I disagree on this subject. Still, I haven’t come by this opinion overnight, or without a great deal of consideration. It’s a fascinating topic.

I don't think this is true. If Buddy decided to forego a scholarship he could have made money already? This is a first. I thought the mascot/cheerleaders sat in the AD and were bound to the rules of NCAA.

I assumed the student athletes had requirements for the AD outside of the actual playing which included some community outreach.
