Do we really need the flagrant foul rule?

Don't the refs already have the power to T up a flagrant? Yes, I know I have seen it many times. Tinkering for the sake of it.
I fear I just saw the Louisville fans screaming for one to be called, and that kind of trend would be a really disturbing addition to college basketball.
