Back in the late 80's, when the days of independent football were numbered, the BE realized that they had a growing football problem ... namely SU, Pitt, and BC.
The football schools needed a conference home for their programs, and were willing to leave the BE to do so. There were talks of the Eastern and Southern Indies forming a FB conference under the Metro League banner.
One of the options Tranghese considered was the ACC. Tranghese approached the ACC about taking in SU, Pitt, and BC as partial members for football only. The ACC thought he was nuts.
The last option the BE wanted was to invite Miami as a full member and to get into the football business, but that turned out to be the only option.
Well, it took almost 25 years, but Mikey T finally got r done.
