I want to preface this by saying I'm a former member of the 10th MTN, but I'm wondering if the time the team spends at Ft Drum actually hurts the team. It's undeniably great for team building, but is it a distraction from football? Maybe more football reps and less obstacle courses would help the team shed its notorious slow starts.

Well, they sure looked well behind Nova in terms of being ready to start the season.

As a former football coach I would say it likely doesn't hurt the team. As long as the obstacle course and other military type training are in place of the usual exercise/warm up drills and not in place of football drills and installation of the defense and offense. I do not know the specific schedule at Ft Drum but overall I would not think it is a distraction.

I can't help but think there is a bit of "get-away vacation" mentality with the Ft Drum trip. wasn't a fan of the idea when Marrone introduced it and am not a fan of it now.

Time in the preseason is extremely limited. It seems counter productive to pick up and move your entire training camp to anther location for a week. New routines, new beds, new tasks, new distractions.

How would it hurt us? The kids there are immersed in football for the same amount of practice time that they would be if they were on campus, and have the same amount of down time / free time in Fort Drum that they would if they were on campus, minus the on-campus distractions. :noidea:

As long as they get the same amount of practice time I don't see how it hurts. And without the non-football distractions of being back on campus I have to believe it's better and certainly nothing can match the team building exercises.

However, what is unknown to me is if team-building actually replaces practice time. What's allowed and not allowed by the NCAA in terms of 'practice time' and hours etc.

I'm not going to go searching for it now but I believe it was last year there was a similar thread or posts when the team started off badly questioning the time spent at Drum. Personally I think the team building exercises they go through are invaluable.

And PhatOrange my recollection from posting those camp threads is that they still practiced every day the team was at Drum except the day they scrimmaged.

Away games.. new beds, new tasks, new distractions. Guess we should always play at home.

I guess that was my main question, does the team spend the same amount of time on football activities / practice at Drum as they would if they stayed on campus? If they do, great, but aren't there other detriments, like the lack of first class strength and conditioning facilities, nutrition, etc.? Believe me, nothing will foster teamwork and strengthen intestinal fortitude, plus put things in perspective, like the world's greatest army, but still.

i guess i see your point with regards to the weightroom, but i cant imagine the conditioning being an issue, running is running.

same with the nutrition.

if it is, lets grab a couple of boxes of fruits & veggies from manley, throw em in bees prized gremlin...and send him up for a few days with a practice pass. its not like theyre behind the lines of a colombian drug cartel.

could it be that the board has overestimated the talent??

could it be that the board has overstimated the staff??

nah, i suppose its possible, but theres no precedent for that doomsday scenario.

wait...

Yes yes yes and yes

Leave that stuff for Army, Navy and Air Force. We are not a service academy. Get more football reps!

If they get the same amount of reps that they would on campus GREAT, but I don't think they do...

One other advantage of Ft. Drum is the team is removed from social media, tv, xbox, etc., and are therefore forced to interact outside of practice. In theory, this should build relationships and make for a stronger bond among teammates...I'm not going to pretend that any of us can confirm or deny this, but I don't think getting away from campus is a bad thing.

In another thread, someone mentioned the timing of the trip (early on in camp when most drills are fundamental-based vs. later on when the systems are being installed) could have an impact. That might have some merit, but I think the overall trip is a major positive.
