Gotta love this team so far in general. However, to get to the FF & perhaps win a championship, I still think we will need the dominent go to type of guy who can deliver consistantly with the game on the line. So far it has been by committee with Scoop, Brandon, Kris, and Dion taking turns. James has also shown he can do it should we happen to run into a D2 level team in the FF. Melo has proven that he can take over for stretches, but he wll need at least one more season (should he stay) to really be a dominator. Part of the issue with Melo is his teammates not consistantly getting him the ball as they did for Rick last season, so it is obvious the guys he plays with do not see him in that role at this point in time. CJ just makes critical playes on both ends be it to get a key bucket, a key board, a key steal, etc., but at this stage of his development he isn't a player you can just give the ball to & let him create or score. So getting back to the Big 4 they are all very good players, but truthfully, none of them are really elite players ala Sullinger or Lamb. last year with Walker we witnesses how far one dominent player can take a team with a little bit of help. Scoop has the best mindset in terms of wanting to be that player, but as we all know the elite skills and athleticism are simply lacking and he can do it sometimes, but not all of the time. KJo can get hot from three & he can take it to the hole on the drive if he gets the mis-match. He excels in transition. He really need to be able to post up at about 10' out & be able to create/score consistantly from there to put himself into the go to dominent role. I don't see any reason why he can't do that skillwise, but on the court that does not seem to be a part of his game. Probably too late in his career as a collegiate to add that dimension to his game. That leaves Dion and Brandon, both are very strong guards. Dion is better at creating his shot, Brandon is better as a pure shooter when given time. Both can go the hole with power. Dion, I think, very badly wants that role. Brandon has been more content to take what is given to him, though I really liked his play and aggressiveness last night. Could the light switch have turned on for him ? So all in all, I have no conclusion about any of the four really stepping up to be that man at this point in time. So far the committee approach has worked, but come Dance time, we will need somebody who we can really count on to step up and dominate consistantly if we are to go very deep IMHO.
