The coaches fund does not go towards NIL. NIL is a separate fund, and you have to tell them that you want your donation to go to women's basketball. The coaches discretionary fund goes to operational costs. It won't buy Uche. A couple of years ago, I was on a zoom call with Coach Jack where we were instructed on how to donate specifically to the NIL for women's basketball. That NIL closed in the fall. I don't know the current method, but I can try to find out. Remember NIL has to be a separate function from the athletic department. You donate through the Champion cuse in athletics for money that goes directly into the revenue sharing pool.

Why does SU make it so difficult to donate and support the team? I really did google and search the SU sites to try to find the link(s) I thought wouldy help us to help Coach FLJ. Why not have a link right next to each player’s name on the roster for purchase of that player’s apparel etc that has their number/ image etc that helps benefit the player. There should be a separate public process for Large corporate, big booster NIL $ to donate and another easy process for smaller everyday fan donations. It’s pretty useless for Coach FLJ to ask for monetary support/ donations when the way to do it efficiently is secretive. It should be an easy process for fans to participate. It’s currently convoluted when the process to do so can’t be found. Why would a coach’s fund not help support retention of current players and/or recruit new transfer players? Why isn’t there anything listed to tell supporters how they can actually help to retain current players and also donate to help recruit future transfer players. It just seems very frustrating when we’re being asked to help but no clear directive on the way to actually do it. I feel badly since I donated and also directed others to donate to Coach FLJ’s fund, thinking I was helping Coach Jack but you are saying the only available donation link unfortunately isn’t actually helping NIL for the team. I was thinking the same, if it was a Jesse Edwards issue. Bet Kamilla Cardoso had the same issue. Seems strange that West Virginia and South Carolina, large state land grant universities seem to not have any issue. Uche is certainly getting noticed nationally while playing at SU which is a great thing for her staying.

Lots to unpack here.
As stated the coaches’ discretionary funds are used for operational expenses. Coach Jack purchased a custom conference table and some workout equipment in the past. Coach McIntyre has tapped his for some additional travel amenities on road trips. These funds cannot be used to supplement revenue sharing with student athletes.

Revenue sharing and NIL are two separate means of providing compensation to student athletes. Revenue sharing is the only means by which schools can provide direct payments to athletes and is capped at $20.5MM this year. That cap applies to the aggregate across all sports and may be decremented by up to $2.5MM if the school adds additional scholarships based on the roster limits set by House. The vast majority of this pool goes to football and men’s basketball ostensibly because it is in fact revenue sharing and those are the only two sports that are revenue positive. The Athletics Competitive Excellence Fund under CAF and ChampionCuse directly supports revenue sharing. I don’t believe there is a methodology to target to an individual athlete or sport since every dollar paid from this fund comes out one $20.5MM bucket but suggest anyone interested reach out to Jordie Kindervater for complete information.
Schools are still prohibited from engaging in and brokering true NIL deals which are payments to student athletes for use of their name, image or likeness. These deals are generally one to one between a specific player and a business. Women’s basketball is featured prominently in local ads for NYE Auto and Apex Entertainment.
There are two channels for an individual to support NIL nationally. The first is to broker and fund an individual deal for an appearance, merchandising or autograph session as examples.
Syracuse used to enable this through the Accelerate platform operated through the INFLNCR app. It doesn’t appear that this is currently active.
Another widely used platform is Opendorse. This is a menu based one-to-one tool to transact directly with an athlete similar to Cameo. Several women’s basketball players are active here though I don’t know how much of a role the SUAD plays in administering or promoting.

The other avenue for an individual to support NIL is through a collective. That approach uses an intermediary to harvest grass roots donations, aggregate them, and contract with a student athlete directly supplementing a business opportunity, supporting a charitable or community based event, or holding meet and greet type events with the public. With the sunsetting of Orange United SU no longer has an active collective other than SU Football NIL which is involved with only that sport.
When I ran the SyraCRUZ Tailgate NIL Initiative I started by personally harvesting donations and working directly with student athletes via INFLNCR. We had naming deals with Enrique Cruz but also had appearance deals with athletes from 8 other sports including women’s basketball players Olivia Owens, Dyaisha Fair, Kyra Wood, Lexi McNabb and others where they attended our tailgates. As that initiative grew - we did deals with 48 student athletes totaling over $68k over three years - it became too big for me to manage using home grown spreadsheets and personal bank accounts so we partnered with Orange United. Unfortunately with no replacement for OUC our NIL Activity was discontinued.
The final point is specific to foreign student athletes. It is the restrictions under their -1 student visa that excludes them from NIL activity, not an NCAA rule. Holders of -1 visas are not permitted to perform and be paid for productive work in the host country. There are workarounds where an NIL deal can be executed in the athlete’s home country or a different class of visa is applied for (many professional athletes are here on O-1 visas issued for exceptional talent) but those approaches are much more tedious administratively to execute. For someone like Uche there is also the allure of professional basketball. Based on her age I think she is still a year away from the WNBA draft eligibility age limit of 22, but there is discussion that may change as early as this year. The age limit for international players who don’t play ncaa basketball is 20. So keeping her in orange means not only fending off other college programs with greater resources and more aggressive approaches to circumventing visa requirements, but may also involve the potential of a professional opportunity.

Realistically we need some local businesses to step up their sponsorship efforts of the women’s team and do it through NiL deals. That’s the most efficient way to truly raise real money. Businesses can do it in tax advantaged ways. The only way an ordinary person can donate and have it be deductible is if it goes to the school.

You could have a women’s collective but the administrative hassle wouldn’t be worth it when we really just need a small number of businesses. You would think there would be a nice ROI for a NY business to sponsor a prominent women’s sport in the state. obviously there are certain businesses that get more mileage out of that if they’re targeting a heavier female customer base too.

It is possible that at this moment in time this is the only option that is guaranteed to go directly to the program. That is why I wanted to reach out specifically to her and women's basketball for the answer of what she is referring to when she talks about the program needing more funds. I know they need the big NIL money which she can't comment on or have anything to do with. I made sure that she knew we were the smaller donors, for the most part, and by smaller, I mean we aren't giving anything like $50,000 which I know people who do. I've given small amounts and I know a few times $500. I think once I gave $1,000 to satisy a requirement when I was serving on the National Alumni Board and was in the Hill Society. Now my amounts have to be smaller again.

Yes it hurts hearing and knowing Coach Jack is worried about $ to recruit and retain players and yet fans have no way of knowing how to help SU women’s basketball. Thank you for all you do too.

We need a collective for something other than football to harvest grass roots donations. There was talk of Orange United moving from SANIL to Blueprint Sports, but BPS terms apparently were not acceptable to SU. Oregon State, Arkansas and others have terminated agreements with BPS and Maryland is in the process of doing the same so that’s understandable.
Anything orchestrated through SU directly is constrained by the $20.5MM limit so it is understandable that targeted donations cannot be accommodated. It is essentially a zero sum game. Every dollar earmarked for a minor sport conceivably reduces funds that could go to the revenue positive sports. Syracuse’s approach seems to be reliance on corporate deals and high end donors to fund NIL. That essentially limits the audience and keeps more modest donors out of the player compensation game.

4. Hit Continue and then next and it will take you to the payment page.
At some point you will have put in your donation amount and name etc. Mine is saved so not sure if at #2, #3 or #4.
ANd that is how you donate specifically to the revenue sharing fund just for women's basketball.

Based on my email, there is at some point in the near future going to be a big meeting with Wildhack, and a lot of other people in the athletic department to more clearly delineate a method for donating to specific revenue sharing sports for any of our sports, and also possible for NIL funds. But honestly NIL funds need to be big and if you are a Mark Cuban type of donor, please, please contact the athletic department so they can put you in the correct place to "buy" our great women's basketball players. Not knowing who is on here, one of us (no, not me) may be a secret billionaire.

AND FYI Foreign players CAN get the revenue sharing funds, just not NIL funds.

The above fund is at the discretion of the athletic director to be used for player needs, so it is the best method at the moment.

If you already donated to the Women's Basketball Head Coach fund, do not worry. While it is used for operating costs, those costs could include things that would make the players world a better place. So that is still an important donation.
