I've settled on it like this. It absolutely is something that matters to recruits and payers, though not in the top 5 of things that help them decide on what school to attend. Old fans (like me and you, I think) remember the uni from when we were relevant and link that to the Syracuse brand. This is ok. It matters. Younger fans have had very little to cheer about and are probably less enamored with the current look. If we were good now, this look would have more staying power.

The truth of it all is that it matters a bit. But not a lot. Not enough to have a bazillion threads about it.
