If he can hold off AJ, I am hoping Dungey can be as good as or better than Hunt was when he took over after Allen. That 2013 season ended 6-6 with a QB who got better as the season went on but was insufficent. Is Dungey just as good as Hunt as a redshirt soph? If this is the case and if the defense plays surprising well, we can have a realistic chance to go bowling. We will see against Wake. Thoughts?

As much as I do not see us losing to Wake, this week will tell a bit more in regards to ED. I want to believe the kid is the future and that the future starts this season with a bowl win. I expect to see lots of run game and hope for the D to step up this week.

You are onto something -- this season has the potential to mirror 2013.

offense stayed about the same with Hunt or Dungey in there friday. Lots of play action and moving of the qb and lots of runs. Id expect us to show more of the playbook this week since we pretty much were in the same formation the majority of the game.

I'm about 50/50 on that. I think the ceiling is way higher with Dungey. If what they are saying is true about how quick he's digesting the playbook (Ivy offers) and he's more accurate and the system he's playing in makes more sense - I think 7 wins is still possible. He'll make mistakes of course - but I'm very bullish on this kid.

I'll call it right now - Dungey will leave Syracuse as the all-time leader in TD passes.
4 year starter with some talent here/on the way at WR...possible

Regarding Dungey v. Hunt circa 2013, we need a solid running game to help while Dungey gets his sea legs.

Not hard to believe. I think he may be the only true frosh that has started from game 1. He will have better receivers than in most years. We will probably pass more often than when we ran the freeze

The days of it being uncommon for true Freshman QB to start are over. Just look at what we saw Saturday. There are Freshman QB's all over the country who are starting for their program. I really think Dungey has the skills, maturity, and aptitude to have a very good season. I love everything about Hunt, but he's just not that very good a quarterback. It's not like he got off too a great start, and if he was going to try and not run as much then i'm afraid of what the season may have become. It's impossible to put this in a nice way, so i'll just say it. His injury may be a blessing in disguise. I really don't think we suffer any sort of drop off, and if anything Dungey will give us a better chance at moving the ball through the air. I just hope Lester doesn't handcuff him, and call the game too conservative.

Exactly what I'm thinking.

The truth is... the record isn't all that high.

I agree with this! Hunt has some great tools but I never loved how he ran the offense. I think Dungey gives us a lot more options.

Marvin Graves?

Graves redshirted. Joe Fields could have been the guy but that didn't work out so well.

Gee I can't remember. Anyone? Bueller...Bueller...anyone?
you go back and look at the record book and the list of true FR who even threw the ball at SU is pretty small. 1982-1983 was the last time we went through stuff like 2014-1015.

I went through my web site database and found this

AJ long - game 6 - 2014
Todd Norley - game 3 1982
Greg Christadulu - game 3 1982
Ronald Farneski - game 1 1976
Andrew Robinson - game 7 2006
Don Macpherson - game 1 1983

Antwon Bailey - game 11 2008
Scott Schwedes - game 6 1986

Boys, boys, boys!

I'll agree Dungey can potentially match Hunt's 2013 season. Let's not forget Hunt was fairly mediocre until the BC game and the bowl. But let's wait for him to complete a few downfield passes to his hideouts before we annoying him one of the best ever.

Look. I'm cautiously optimistic about the potential and agree the tools necessary to succeed appear to be there. But I think the kid needs to mature physically and experientially on what is now an accelerated time frame. The game will speed up exponentially on him from here on out. This is far from ideal.

ah, yeah.
i'm losing my memory in my old age.

Hunt wasn't mediocre until the last two games be Pitt and BC. Prior to that he was bad.

I think Dungey starts from mediocre and that the ceiling is higher this season.

He'll make mistakes. And he'll have bad games. But I like our chances with true FR Dungey just as much as with SR Hunt.

Hold off AJ? He beat him out in 4 weeks.

I agree Hunt soph. year he couldn't complete a pass further than 15 yards against ACC competition until Pitt and BC. He moved the offense with his feet against NC State and Maryland. We will find out this week what they will allow Dungey to do. I think he will get better at a faster rate than Hunt did that year. Is it too far fetch to hope for John O'Korn type freshman year? That will make me very happy.

I fully admit I'm overly optimistic about Dungey, but I haven't been this excited about a freshman QB as long as I can remember. He's got all of the tools to be a success and seems to have some solid intangibles as well. Athletic, smart, confident, and has a strong arm and can make all of the throws.

I honestly believe when he's done he will be the 5th QB in our all-time top 5 (McNabb, McPherson, Graves, Nassib being the other four).

People will think I'm crazy - but I think it's possible. A lot of things have to right - but I think we all cross it off the list mentally because of the baggage of the last decade... "I'll believe it when I see it"
