I know many will not like this comment but...we are speaking with a jaded opinion right now. Our QB got hammered on a horrible hit and was completely defenseless while taking it and to top it off looked to get horribly injured. I understand the reaction. Praying Dungey is all right after that brutal hit. But believe it or not I agree with their coaches comments and think coach Shafer would say the same if it was the other way around. We look at these stills afterwords and it looks much dirtier than it was. This kid is coming full bore flying in to get to the QB. Now you can tell he knows he is not going to prevent the pass from getting off as it is away just before he starts to lunge at him. What these pics do not show is how quick the timing was between them. When playing defense you know damn well you have a certain amount of time allowed to hit a QB with it being legal. I'm betting the timing between the ball being released and him him is somewhere between a half a second to a full second. I think this probably was a late hit but I don't think he was trying to injure Dungey per se. He was definitely trying to get a good lick on him which our guys would do as well. Dungy is falling and its pretty hard to get a hit on him and not hit him in the head in that situation. No way he knows he's as defenseless as he is at that moment with things moving so fast. That said with the new rules this year there is no doubt this is not targeting and he should have been ejected like he was. Hopefully the new rule starts to changes some defenders mentality of trying to get the extra lick on a QB to send a message. There is going to be many times when head to head was not intended but the player will get ejected. I'm sure this situation will hurt us soon and most likely this year with how often helmet to helmets happen. But I like the rule and hope it prevents some serious injuries. When a player tries to tackle a guy you want to come in right at the middle of him so you don't miss him. I have a feeling trying to get your head out of the way is much more difficult than most fans think.
