Maryland will hire Michigan defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin as its next head coach, sources told FootballScoop Wednesday. Sports Illustrated first reported the move.

At Maryland, Durkin’s task will be tall: butt heads with Urban Meyer, Mark Dantonio, James Franklin and his former boss Jim Harbaugh on an annual basis while rebuilding a program that stands at 23-38 since Randy Edsall’s hiring in 2011.

He will have advantages at his disposal, though. Durkin will have access to a prosperous recruiting territory in Maryland, D.C. and Virginia, a new indoor facility is on the way, and the full support of Under Armour at his back.

But for a program not shy about its aim to become the Oregon of the East Coast, the Terps have broken away from the Ducks’ offense-first mold and have instead bet on defense.

We might find out soon enough. Might help if the new coach hired Acosta, which I really hope happens.

The idea of someone transferring is ludacrisp especially in football where your shelf life is zero. It also assumes Michigan would take one of our transfers...crazy talk.

Now if it's a transfer looking for a 5th year, sure that makes sense. Otherwise, some of these guys may enjoy what's about to happen at Syracuse. Happy for Shafer if he lands at Michigan. He may end up with that job when Harbrough goes back to the NFL in 3-4 years. Everyone may win in the end.

You realize Michigan recruited Pickard, right? It's not just some random transfer they didn't have on their radar.

Pickard would have to sit out again and then only have 3 years left to play. Pick could be a 4 rear starter here. Anybody transferring has a big decision.

We could also play hardball and not release them. wont happen and i don't advocate it but just sayin.

Funny...last time Maryland went with the established and successful coach who built a program from 1-AA to a Fiesta Bowl appearance. They failed at that and are now going for a factory coordinator.

Ok, so I need to backtrack. Because of the way this would all come together, this is the ONE situation where I can see a player transferring to a P5 school.

Which would suck, but nothing you can control at this point.

Cheech and Chong were ahead of him, but I guess we lose them for half of next season?

Possibility but not probable. I don't care where his girlfriend is.

Would make for a nice trip to Ann Arbor to catch up during spring break.
