Just looked at all the Highlights of the incoming class. On second review, I really like the film of Kenterius
Wolmack!!...I think he has a good arm. great speed and looks to be really explosive. I think we got a "setal" on this one...and I would not be surprised if he and Culpepper ...I could envision a plantoon... ala Northwestern..with these two different style QB's...I think our QB situation looks bright !

NO. NO. NO! No Platoon or Plantoon or anything close to that word

"He's Doc-tor Bill. He's Doc-tor Bill. He loves the U-ni-ver-si-ty Hill..."

Sorry. I'll show myself, out.

Wilson has a great arm. He is the best passer of the current QB's by far. He was thrown to the wolves last year and he won the Vil game. If he matures and makes good decisions based on an O that he can grasp i think that he could really surprise. The kid can sling it just needs to grow into the position.

His pocket presence and decision making under fire have to improve or he won't see the field as a game 1 starter.

I couldnt agree more. I really hope that he matures and grows as i see him as the only true passer out of the QB's with the exception of Culpepper who would be a long shot to start. Lesters O is going to need someone who is pretty accurate and Wilson is the best by a long shot.

I don't agree with that--at all. Long is far more accurate than Wilson, who showed no discernible starting potential when given multiple opportunities last year.

The question about whether Long will develop enough physically to make all the throws is valid, but his accuracy seems much better than Wilson's.

the throws that Long made were mostly on broken plays, sand lot ball. He does have accuracy but he lacks arm strength. I think it comes down to Long maturing physically as you say vs Wilson growing his pocket awareness. Lets hope one of them steps up.

Agreed. Doesn't matter who [including Dungey, Womack, and Culpepper]--but we absolutely, 100% need one of these guys to emerge as an above average playmaker.

The good news is that in this group we have what looks to be a ton of potential.

I don't want to be "that guy" at all. As you know, I'm generally one of the more optimistic posters on the board.

But I really need to see the results on the field before I get excited about any QB prospects we bring in. I'm jaded post-McNabb. We've seen this narrative too many times for me to fall for it again. Cecil the Diesel. Perry Patterson [both four star recruits]. Chad Elliot. Joe Fields. And on and on and on.

Like you, I look at who we've brought in and I want to get excited. Dungey. Womack. Culpepper. But then I remember a few years ago, when I was incredibly optimistic about having Robinson, Catalina, and Legree, and my expectations get tempered.

I root for every player we recruit, so I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer. I just need to see one of these guys emerge before I get excited about a QB prospect ever again. We've seen so many flops, I just can't get too high or too low anymore with expectations--I need to see them show something before I get excited, and I expect all of them to flop until they prove otherwise.

And I know how pessimistic that sounds. I don't intend to come across that way. I mean for it to be more realistic than pessimistic.

That said, I hope one of the QBs on the roster over the next few years knocks us dead. I honestly do. And I will support that player 100%. But do I think that there is a surefire above average QB in the queue? Not sure. I think--emphasis on "think"--that Long might be that guy. Then again, he's so physically weak I'm not sure that he'll ever be able to develop into a difference maker. I think Dungey might have the goods, but then again he didn't even get offers from home state schools like Oregon [not necessarily surprising, since they are a national power] and Oregon State [definitely a surprise]. And where were the rest of the Pac 12 / west coast offers if he is as good as I think he could be? Like many, I love Womack's raw athleticism. But his film makes him look like more athlete than QB--no surprise, since he's a multi sport guy who hasn't focused upon football until now. Will he improve, or will his value lie at another position? And I am pumped about Rex's offer list--honestly, how could you not be? But I'm afraid that he's going to be a player that disappoints relative to the offer list. That might seem like an unfair expectation, but again--show me. I want to see it on the field.

I really, really, really, really, really, really hope we have a multi-year starter somewhere in this queue. That would go a long way toward rectifying the issues we've had on offense. We need someone--anyone--to emerge.

I don't think this is true. I rewatched the Clemson game the other day and Long wasn't great out of the pocket. We had a rough day vs on of the best D's in the country- but when we were successful it was timing patterns 10 yards deep. He was very accurate that day.

Wilson can be too. The difference is when the pocket collapses or he's forced out - he literally throws jump balls.

Agree 1000%. I think "show me" is very fair. It's when people say "we have sucked for so long, these guys probably suck too" that bugs me.

I think it's more fun to be overly optimistic (esp in the offseason) - but it is hard to do so when it's been so rough.

Well said. I'm no recruitnik so my opinion on our QB recruits is far from well-informed, but I do recall back when we had the McNabb/Johnson/Downing battle post-Kevin Mason that all were highly regarded. No one could have known that McNabb would turn out to be an all-timer, but there was certainly the feeling that whomever emerged froim that competition was going to be very good. I'm not sure anyone we have in the pipeline has those kinds of credentials, so we're more in a hope-and-wish mode than expect-very-goodness mode.

personally, i just assumed the winner was going to be good because well, donnie, marvin and mason were all good.

thats where my expectations were. next man up...and he will be great too.

sigh...

Times have changed. The term "dual-threat" quarterback hadn't even been invented. Our guys (and scheme) were Pied Pipers to some extent.

Times have changed but that's overdoing it. Randall Cunningham had already had a great NFL run before Marvin Graves started a single game at SU. The concept of dual threat QBs was very much in existence. I agree that SU was a pioneer in recruiting black QBs (and letting them play QB) and that was very much an advantage for us in the 80s and 90s. I keep saying that I wish we would find a similar edge to exploit today, but we seem intent on following the pack.
