It is a college wide problem, no question. In my view the only way to fix it, is one that isn't going to be acceptable to most people. I think that the fix doesn't involve funneling money to the players that prefer to play for pay, an alternative needs to be created for these players. I would like to see (i) Colleges return to a model where they are only taking student athletes that are attending to get a degree, not athletes attending because that is the best path to a professional career and (ii) the NBA creates a real alternative for kids that want to play professional basketball and have no interest in going to school. Putting aside the actual draft structure the model works really well in baseball. If you want to play professionally you either get drafted out of high school or you go to a free agent tryout and get signed. If you want a college degree you pursue a college degree and you have the opportunity to play baseball while doing so. That doesn't mean that kids that attend college can't ever play professionally, there are plenty of examples of guys that get a degree and go on to play in the pros; Rak is our latest example. I just don't understand how the kid like CMac who only intends to come to school for one year has any business attending college to get to the pros, other than that is where he is being forced under today's model. You can't convince me that going to school and getting 15-30 random college credits is a positive for the guys doing it?
