From my "Playoffs!" write up for 2013. Eastern Illinois got a first round bye and met Tennessee State in the second round: "Once upon a time Tennessee State was a powerhouse. The top southern schools didn’t take black players and the Tigers, like Grambling, Florida A&M and Morgan State, among others had line-ups full of future NFL players. That was a long time ago and those players are playing for Alabama, LSU and Florida State now. This year’s squad was no match for Eastern Illinois, who had already beaten the Tigers 34-16 on 10/26. This time it was 37-0 at halftime and 44-0 before Tennessee State could score. The Panthers had a huge total yardage edge, 553-287. Shepard Little rushed for 184 yards and 2TDs. Jimmy Garoppalo passed for 240 yards and 3 scores, giving him and incredible 4,729 yards passing for the season with 51 touchdowns and only 9 interceptions. The final score was 51-10, giving the Panthers 636 points in 13 games, an average of 49 points per game." What it looked like: In the quarterfinals: "Eastern Illinois was the nation’s highest scoring FCS team and looked it in the first quarter against Towson State, scoring easily on their first two possessions. People have compared them to Baylor because they run a similar offense. Towson, a power running team behind Terrence West, who had been the division’s second leading rusher, seemed out of its element. But the game was played in the elements, still another played in a snowstorm, and the power running game was the way to go. And go West did, running for an incredible 354 yards and 5 touchdowns on 39 carries. The Tigers scored three unanswered touchdowns in the second quarter to take a lead they never surrendered. The Panther’s great quarterback Jimmy Garoppalo, tried his best to keep up, passing for 321 yards, an amazing 38 for 50- but mostly short passes) but only 2 touchdowns. Erik Lora caught 18 of those passes for 129 yards and a score. They got to within 32-35 and forced a punt in the fourth quarter. But Towson forced a punt and drove for a score and the forced a fumble on a sack and scored again to make it 32-49. Eastern scored again but it took 16 plays and 4:21. Towson was able to run out the clock on the 49-39 win." What it looked like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIsKDIIhai4 We won't be playing in the snow unless it's in Boston or Pittsburgh. If it takes 39-49 to beat us, I think we'll still have more than our share of fun in the next few years.
