Judging by my profile picture, you all can probably guess who my favorite current Orangeman is...

Speaking plainly though, who else thinks that a lot of our pass protection issues are going to be solved by moving the Rhino back to his natural position at FB/TE, in more of a pass pro role. Very rarely has Chris touched the ball (albeit I've wanted him to get more goal-line carries) and I think that having a solid backfield blocking presence who doesn't have to fill gaps on the line is going to work wonders for our passing game this year. Or, at the very least, improve it, and give whoever it is more than a millisecond to read his keys.

Discuss!

Really been wondering how he will be used. I really thought that they would move him to DL. That he would be most affective there.
If the Oline is really improved not sure where he lines up. DB does not usually use a two back set and if he did I’d figure it would be tucker/lutz or tucker/Howard. Having one come out of the back field for a pass.
TE (which we need to use more) seems to fit more Benson, Morris, mang. Tall TE that can beat LBs in coverage. Rino does not fit that mold.
I really like Rino and everything he has done for the team. It will be interesting how he is used. Really want him to excel.

Tony White does want more athletic d linemen. Still though I think he plays H back. He played there for the ND game and the run game was actually solid

THIS.

Which was in part by having NOT Elmore on the O-Line.
And - by having him do what he does so well, HUUUUGE blocks to spring long runs.

BOTH long TD's that game featured a KEY Rhino block.

Just watching this tape towards the end you can see the impact that Chris has opening up holes at the point of attack,

he excels at creating space for our back in the A and B gaps, and in the ND game Sean exploited that,

would love to see this on repeat this year with a healthy line.

yes, I'm knocking the wood furiously.

He prolly wouldn't get a lot of playing time on the DL anyway this year, FB/TE is his spot.

Dino runs 21 personnel quite often. Sometimes Rhino is back there and sometimes its a traditional TE. We rarely throw to the TE when they are in a the backfield so its more benefitial to have one of your best blockers when you run inside zone, power, counter and lead plays. Rhino is a big part of making the run game connect and protection on pass plays. He will do all the little things that will make the offense function.

Elmore was never good on the DL. He played a few snaps because they were lacking bodies. He is limited with his size and lateral movement. He is playing exactly where he should be playing.

Right on. He was the first senior player that I wanted to return. Im glad he gets to play the position he was brought in to do. Running game is better when he's in the backfield. He is now in the best shape since he's been here. He won't be in every set but he will be very impactful this season.

So, you enjoy 15 yard penalties then? :p
I enjoy watching our guys punish their guys. Besides, can't a running back lead with the head if he's carrying the ball?

My hope is that we do not need to keep him back on pass plays this year. Limits our offensive when we have to keep the tight end in to block. Rb should be able to pick up the blitz when needed. Cannot just have Elmore back as fb/rb or teams will know it’s a pass.

They run and pass out of that set. We have a lot of plays out of 21 personnel. In 21 personnel you have a FB, RB, TE and 2 Wr's that can go out for passes. TE doesnt have to stay in to block. FB can help block. 21 personnel is a balanced set that allows you to run and throw some of your base pass plays, RPO and your play action pass. We have to be able to run the ball out of our best run sets. When safeties come down in the box to stop run it allows us to take 1v1 shots down the field. Thats how this offense works.

By the letter of the law that’s targeting, it just never gets called.

It’s also a great way to break your neck.

Appreciate the breakdown.

Hopefully our TE Mang is in those sets and occasionally we throw a pop pass across the middle for a big gain. Do that a couple of times and that will back the linebackers off the line of scimmage.

His most significant role, I suspect, will be as a locker room leader. In that area, we may see his greatest impact. He made his bones last year with his team first and team only attitude.

Yeah. I’m not sure why we don’t throw the ball to the TE more. Makes no sense to me. South Florida TE caught 43 passes in 2018. So I guess there’s hope.

Definitely an interesting question as to what we do with Rhino this season, but I wonder about the offense after Rhino.

We don't have another player on the roster like him or that fills in what he does.

Are we just not replacing that?

if my memory serves me right, I think there was one game where elmore graded out the highest on the OL.
