I don't want to tell you that you're wrong, so I'll just say that I cannot disagree more. The word "brand" is a simple single word trying to define that a symbol or logo represents more than the physical attributes of the image (a block "S"). It's about what that represents, what meaning is behind that image or logo. The stars and stripes is a logo but it's not about that, it's about what that means. If the colors of the flag were changed, or a five pointed star is changed to six points, I don't think that you'd be upset about it as a graphic design. I think it would be about what the meaning or the emotion that is attached to what that symbol represents and how it is affected by the alteration. What message do we send to others. Our military stands, our declaration of independence, our bill of rights, our shared history, and what principles we stand for. It's why coaches get fired. Rick Pitino for example was winning at Louisville, so why did they let him go? Because he was negatively affecting the brand. It's why there are code of conduct policies and team rules. It's why the Yankees don't allow beards, or why they continue to wear pinstripes. In the case of Syracuse, what does it mean to represent the veteran's resource center, the success of Newhouse graduates, the meaning of David Falk's name attached to the Falk School, etc. It is why we look for our traditions, celebrate our history, like Ernie Davis, Dave Bing, Gary Gait, 44, 22... every great story, every famous alum whether Robert Jarvik, or Dick Clark, or Joe Biden, all the things we are proud of as our institution personified and symbolized by that physical, visible image that stands for us when we cannot be there; that messages out who we are to anyone that doesn't know all the history. It is exactly the fact that people outside SU don't know who GRob is. They know our success (or lack thereof) and the product on the field, and the "costumes" we wore when then and they attribute that image image to their impression of us as a team and an institution. It's what connects Wilmeth Sidat-Singh to Derrick Coleman, and even me. I get that this seems mellow-dramatic, but this is why uniform threads exist and we talk about the system we now have and how it represents us better. Look at the ESPN piece about the fall of SU and what Jim Brown had to say about how the on field product didn't represent what he was part of. Jim Brown - "You can have limited talent, and still fight your butt off" Corso - "Daryl Gross... wanted to turn Syracuse into USC. Ain't the same place" It's not a letter, a font, or the logo, it's the brand.
