Eric Dungey, Designer of Plays

I don't like seeing this at all. The kid made a great throw, but to think that Lester had a RUN called on that play is a little disconcerting, IMO.
When is this offense gonna get some cujones and actually look to attack rather than pussyfooting around. I'm shocked we didn't see a patented "bubble screen" on that play! Sheesh

I too wish our true freshman QB could botch more calls and assignments so we can luck ourselves into a short TE throw.

It worked out once, people. I prefer him to get the call correct, read the defense and sling a dagger to Ishmeal. Know what's going on first; then freelance yourself into a first down on purpose.

In this scenario"getting the call correct" would've meant handing off to a running back and watching him get stuffed at the line.
Yes, he got lucky w/ a botched call this time, but the bigger issue is calling a run, instead of looking to actually get the 1st down by letting the kid take a shot downfield. In other words, Lester needs to loosen the reins and let the kid play, dammit!!

Dungey will end up getting the green light from the staff to call the plays at the line. You may even see that happen this year, but I'm guessing it starts next year. He and Lester would design their gameplan and Lester gives Dungey more ability to call an audible at the line. Just my opinion.

The kid is a sponge who loves playing quarterback. So far, he hasn't made any glaring mistakes. That cannot be remotely said for any other QB on this team.

Can't wait to see how this kid plays against some of the top teams in the ACC/LSU.

When Troy Nunes tried to cash checks like the Estime TD, they bounced (except against Pitt).

He was pretty good in that classic game against VT.

Agree 100% on loosening the reins.

But he got lucky on this play. That it worked says more about his ability than anything else.

Some years ago somebody on the board, maybe All4SU said something really smart in the "talent vs coaching, why exactly do we suck?" debate - he said guys that are talented will sometimes just make a play out of raw talent, even if the coaching is poor. I think we are seeing guys make plays on talent now and again, like some of what Dungey has done, Ish's TD last year vs Florida State, etc.

Yeah - I'm all for that. We need talent. But the coaches are not poor. Dungey has and will learn a lot from Lester. Truly great players understand the whys and how's along with making something from nothing.

This quote is getting a lot more buzz around here than the fact he missed some deep throws in the first half where guys were open... Dungey missed them because he is a true freshman. Wait till we see that combo: brains and talent both on the same page most of the time?!? That's why I'm amped. Not because the QB makes a mistake, calls an imaginary play, and gets by on talent. (For the moment - that is great - we need wins abd I don't care how we get them. But long term? I want Lester and Dungey on the same page.)

this play worked.. we have no idea if he made the same mistake and other plays got blown up. mis reading the signals means he may have created a blocking scheme that was complete luck he didnt get drilled.

when hes telling his RBs not to score on the goal line, to go up 10, with under 2 minutes to play...then you give me a call.

until then, he doesnt get it and has a lot of work to do.

Oh Lord

That sounds pretty smart. Almost certainly wasn't me who said it.

24-40 60% 403 yards 1 td 3 int 137.9 rating

how did they score 50 with 3 int?

400 yards passing 200 rushing. tech had 559 yards.

everyone loves that game so much it salvaged a horrible season. but yet some people still think winning boring is both likely and attractive to casual fans

tyree had 229 yards and he was FIFTY YARDS behind the game's leading receiver

crazy

I'm not looking at the box, was the VT leading receiver Emmett ------ shoot I'm forgetting his last name.

EDIT: Ernest Wilford... I was in the corner where Tyree caught the TD.

Didn't intend for that to come across as a knock on the coaches - I think the poster that made that statement did it during the GRob era, so the coaching question was, uh... yeah.

It's not that they think it's attractive to casual fans. It's that they aren't concerned about what appeals to casual fans.

Ironically, I think we're more likely to see him with a green light against the more dangerous LSU than against CMU. I think, and kind of like, that the coaches have tried to focus on ball security and takeaway defense so far. Dungey will be more effective against LSU as a confident 6 td 0 int quarterback than as an 8 td 2 int quarterback. The scary-good sidearm throw (not a toss) to Estime is a sign of things to come. I just hope the receivers can create a little gap for Dungey's throw.
