Got back to the hotel after the game last night and proceeded to drown our sorrows with a glass of wine in the lobby. It was a little after 1 a.m. and the place was packed with Cuse and ND fans just getting back from MetLife and Jets and Lions fans getting an early start on this afternoon's festivities. Sat down with a fellow Cuse fan an struck up a conversation. The guy was obviously very knowledgeable and said the capper on the night was that he was in the Mens' room while his son had a pick 6 TD. I asked him if he was Durell Eskridge's father and he explained not biologically but he had basically acted as a surrogate father for most of Durell's life. Coached him in Pop Warner and at Miami Central. Naturally I asked if Durrell would be back next year. He just smiled and shook his head. Apparently Devonte Freemen and Durrell are very close and Devonte tells Durell on an almost daily basis how great a time he's having with the Falcons. He said that they've been getting very strong feedback from the NFL and with as high as Durrell is projected to go he pretty much has his mind made up. Also asked how the pipeline looks for future Orange from Miami Central. His response was "All they have to do is offer." Says behind Florida State and Miami Syracuse is right at the top of favorite teams with the success Durell has had and feedback from Marquez Hodge and Ollie Vigille. Talked about what ultimately sold Durell on Syracuse and he shared that at the time of our offer, his only other offer was Utah State. Raved about Floyd Little's impact and helped educate Durell on Floyd's place in Syracuse football history and the long glory days of the program. Said once other schools started to express interest and come forward with offers there was no way Durell would have gone back on his word to Floyd. I smiled and shared the story I've heard Floyd tell about his promise to Ernie Davis and how he felt he had to honor that promise after Ernie became ill even though he was enamored with West Point. Said our good nights and headed for the elevators and I asked him to please pass on to Durell that Orange Nation is proud of him for the man he has become after overcoming so much and the passion he shows for Syracuse University and Orange Football. He smiled, took out his cell phone and called Durell on the bus. He talked to Durell for a couple of minutes and handed me the phone and asked me to tell him myself! Very disappointed in the outcome of the game but that conversation capped off a pretty special weekend.
