While I agree completely that Marrone's staff did a great job identifying lightly recruited kids or late bloomers and developing them into good players at the D1 level, I don't think anyone can deny that the 4 stars they did recruit, Spruill, Broyld, Ron Thompson and Wayne Morgan, were all physically ready to play the second they stepped foot on campus. Spruill started as a freshman, Broyld and Morgan both played as freshman and Thompson looked to be a significant part of the offense last year as a freshman prior to getting hurt. Generally, the kids that are rated 4 or 5 stars by the services are those that are being hounded by the big boys and have shown on the national circuit physical attributes and development that puts them ahead of the rest. Combine that with our staff's ability to identify talent, and we should be extremely happy anytime that we land a 4 star recruit. That generally tells us that it's a recruit that is widely regarded as being able to make an immediate impact, and it's a recruit that our staff has identified through their system as being someone they want. The key to the program being successful will always be the ability to identify diamonds in the rough and developing them. But we need to be able to recruit players that can make an immediate impact and be in the program for 4 years as well. Right now, we're supplementing our inability to land the blue chips with 5-7 JUCO's per year. I think as we are able to land more of the blue chip type recruits, our reliance on JUCO's will start to fade.
