talking about players and schemes and coaches..

the quote that finally stood out " its the players not the schemes" you cant run the plays without the players you need no scheme is good enough to overcome..

Stuff and nonsense! It must have been a panel of NFL coaches. Those guys don't know anything!

Fine, you need players to execute a gameplan. No doubt. No argument. But a good coach has the ability to tailor his gameplan to the available players. Bill Belecheck is a fine example of this.

That comment sounds like an excuse made by a coach that was run out of the NFL... Herm Edwards maybe?

Your honor, I'd like to enter the Michigan defense from 2010 to 2011 into evidence...

If coaching makes no difference then they all should be making $100k a year instead of $2 million a year.

If it was all about talent why has Texas no winning every year?

If it was only about coaching, why does Les Miles have one National Championship already and another two games away?

why are coaches so highly paid

LSU has a very strong coaching staff. It isn't just coaching. If SU had the LSU staff we would not be #1, but coaching makes a big difference. If Schiano was at LSU they wouldn't sniff the NCG this year.

Schiano is a poor coach and a poor developer of talent..period...heheheh I think we all agree on that

PS I'd love to see what Shafer would do with the talent they have on defense...

Because they need to be good at recruiting, so they have the players to succeed with.
i'm sure the panel of meatheads would say that's all because of facilities

Well, they do play a big part. That is why facilities are so expensive! :)

How hard is it to really recruit to the FB factories? You could put HCRE at Texas and they would still get talent. And isn't most of the recruiting done by the assistants? The HC is just there to close. That shouldn't cost a school $2 million a year.

IMO coaches are vastly overpaid. There are maybe a dozen guys who are worth their salary. Everyone else should be getting paid $500k and have incentive bonuses.

I suppose you could say something similar about the CEOs of the Fortune 100 companies -- nice job, established business, let the good times roll. But the market says something different -- real good coaches who can recruit, motivate, deal with alums are in high demand. OSU isn't just tossing $$ away with the Urban Meyer hire.
A lot of recruiting is done by assistants, but the head coach has to get his people in the right places, know who can recruit and win, decide who to offer early, get out and close the deal with the best recruits in the key times of the year. Coach Mac earned his money in the homes of his top recruits -- selling himself, the direction of the program, SU, and the opportunities to kids like Pat Kelly, Moose Johnston and on and on. Marrone would be more than worth his money if he could upgrade SU recruiting year over year -- starting from the sad base we had in 2008 and getting us back to some of the excitement of 1997-2002. To do that, he needs to know what it will take to build an offense and start landing better skill guys and horses up front.

I agree that coaches in demand SHOULD be paid lots of $. But why are ALL coaches paid a lot of money? It makes sense that Strong is paid lots of money because Louisville doesn't want to lose him to another school. But when a HC starts off at a school they shouldn't be making as much as they do. Once they have established themselves, they deserve a raise. But these schools throw money around bidding against themselves.

Why is...

Spaziani making $1.1 million
Kevin Wilson making $1.1 million
Cutcliffe making $1.65 million
OLeary making $1.4 million
Marrone making $1.2 million
Dooley making $1.8 million
Sherman making $2.25 million
Fickell $1.5 million
McNeill $1.1 million
Phillips $1.75 million
Coach P $1.6 million
Sark $2.3 million
Sweeney $1.75 million
Rhoads $1.15 million
Hope $950k
Embree $1.1 million
Mullen $2.5 million
London $1.8 million
Butch Jones $1.2 million
Art Briles $1.3 million
Shaw $1 million
Sumlin $1.2 million

None of those guys had any demand going into this season. So how do they get paid that much? Not one of those guys deserved those salaries. Some of those guys couldn't get a job if they were a FA. Some deserve a raise based on this year, or at least a large bonus. But certainly these guys didn't deserve their current pay going into the year.

Also if it is all about talent then are we not saying that coaches are basically salesmen? System, scheme, and gameplans have little to do with record. So whoever sells themselves the best to recruits will have the most success. In business salesmen have low salaries (if any salary) and get paid based on commission.

So why don't schools pay a salary of $500k and they have bonuses for winning record, winning record in conference, making a Bowl, winning a Bowl, winning the conference, making a BCS Bowl, winning a BCS Bowl, finishing Top 25, finishing Top 10, making the NCG, winning the NCG, getting a Top 25 recruiting class, getting a Top 10 recruiting class, having 8Ws, 9Ws, up to going undefeated for the regular season and the entire season?

If a guy hits all his bonuses then by all means give him $5 million a year. But if he meats non he shouldn't get a dime over $500k.

I think it's a combination of talent & coaching. However, if you have the coaching skill & not the talent, there is a ceiling on what you can accomplish as a team.

In the case of Syracuse, the coaching is good, but the limited talent on the team puts a limit upon this staff. I think mediocrity is the max we can get out of this team, based on their level of competition.

If they were in a mid-major conference, they would be competing for a conference title & get somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 wins.

Good point.

I'm sure that the new DC has had a great deal of impact.

But there are probably some new players on the Michigan defense this year and a bunch of players who have gotten better with another year of experience.

I'm pretty sure that Robinson was playing with at least one walk-on starter last year.

Recall that both Robinson and Shaffer had trouble at Michigan.

I agree with the bottom line sentiment expressed on ESPN. It's the players not the system.
