I really wonder how its configured. they still only get us to 40 and 9 four loss teams ahead of us

But Miami at 27?

by their own numbers harder schedule, more game control, higher ranked in everything but the D
more wins, better losses

Massey (28) and Sagarin (44) lag which hurts

Not surprised SU has overachieved from it's stats, their specials, turnover margin, situational defense, and FG kicker have allowed this team to win without great talent.

It's been a great job of coaching.

Yeah, the weird thing about this team is that it's really hard to say with a ton of confidence that we're all that good.

Rather, we've had some luck, and we've controlled what we can, and so far that has produced a very successful season.

We commit very few turnovers.

We generate a lot of negative plays on defense along with making the most of turnovers.

We have the best kicking/punting game and combo and special teams play in the country.

Our conference isn't as mighty as it normally is.

It's a really fortunate mix, but it hasn't happened by accident.

Here's all you need to know about the FPI. They have:

8-1 Buffalo at #74
5-4 Toledo at #70

Buffalo beat Toledo at their place 31-17. Buffalo also beat Eastern Michigan while Toledo lost to them.

Buffalo's win over Temple on the road is also better than any win Toledo has. Temple is ahead of Buffalo too.

Buffalo should be about #25 - 30 not in the 70s and certainly not behind Toledo.

Yeah FPI is a joke. ESPN is a joke in general.

The other thing is, they lead the country in redzone attempts and scores. The lack of top end talent leads to being 7th in TD's and 2nd in FG's. Lots of possession, lots of opportunity, but while much better, can still be stopped in the close redzone.

Doesn't recruiting, and previous records carry weight?

S&P is a joke, at least with regards to SU. 58th, are you kidding me.

Team is 8th in scoring, 15th in total yards, top 10 in scoring possessions, 1st in redzone attempts, 1st in redzone scores, = S&P 41st ranking

It will be interesting to hear what he has to say on his podcast.

I do know that he sees turnovers as luck, and believes starting field position can mask faults.

But it is wacky.

field position can mask things, but its not like we dont go on long drives too. does Ala scoring ST/D pts 10 times a yr masking things, when they couldnt punch it in vs LSU?

All of those stats you mention are highly inflated by the number of snaps we take. It's almost like we play an extra quarter every game because we take so many extra snaps. Our defense suffers in the same stats for the same reasons. I have no comment on the various ratings systems except to say that they are not "biased" because they are just an algorithm. But they are certainly flawed and not perfect.

We won vs Wake, but by the numbers it wasn’t a blow out. And they were ranked in the 90’s.

Turnovers from game to game can be luck, but 8 games in indicates a trend. And great defenses force a lot of turnovers and short fields. Im not saying we have a great defense, mind you.

you can control your giveaways, you have little control of what you cause unless you just create havoc and even then teams can chose to be careful with the ball.

He's said that is true - sacks and QB hurries are the greatest statistical indicator of TO luck. So the pressure we put on Hartman prob increased our odds of creating a TO or two.

Basically - we played our C game in most every way but created enough TO vs a bad team to win. Not a popular take - but good teams have games like that and then win. It would be fun to come out vs Louisville and light it up efficiency wise.

We'll need to play way, way better to beat ND and BC.

Outdoor games with Wind are an issue for teams that cant run with power. I think it helps with guys like TD who have guns.

All you can do is win. I have no problem a flawed algorithm working in our favor for once.

Where is a good site for NCAA rankings in all these special offensive & defensive categories? When I go to the NCAA site, I only see a few things available.

cfbanalytics.com is the best advanced statistical site I've come across. Better to view in full format vs. mobile if you wanna sort by category.
