Etan has his own perspective bias and an 'interest' in finding this type of controversy. I'm darker than Etan and have a different perspective. I pretty much agree with what Jackson said: about prison-inspired clothing trends (not exclusive to Black people), about the ludicrous efforts to 'brand' equity efforts with platitudes on the jerseys... Yeah, it was a quaint notion for the NBA to be involved in those politics, but the execution was primitive and unsustainable. None of the actual substance of the issue was ever addressed. Some NBA player wearing a shirt that said "Respect us"—just insipid and possibly as harmful as helpful.

I don’t know how anyone could object to anything that Etan writes here. This is Emerald Garner, Eric Garner’s daughter:
“NBA players as a whole supported my family after my father was choked to death by the NYPD. Back then, every time I turned on the TV, all I saw were people justifying his murder and saying why my father deserved to die,” she wrote.

“When NBA players were putting Black Lives Matter on the front of their shirts, it wasn’t about promoting an organization, they were using their tremendous platforms to take a stand and saying that our lives mattered. That my father’s life mattered. That George Floyd’s life mattered. That Breonna Taylor’s life mattered. It meant so much to us impacted family members. I will forever be thankful to the NBA and all the athletes who stood with us.”
