Because of the speed at which our offense plays (quick scoring drives as well as three and outs) our defense is forced to face more possessions per game than most other teams. Rather than looking at the number of points allowed per game perhaps we should look at points allowed per possession or the percentage of possessions where we don't allow points (stops) in determining how good our defense is. Hopefully SWC our "bored historian" or Stern, who recently dug up a stat on the % of possessions we score on could come up with the necessary data. I suspect that our defense might just be better than most think.
