I think we all can agree that Starting has been misused most of his career, and has had insufficient talent around him most of his career. In spite of this, he has had some really good statistical seasons. Efficiency is definitely a thing, and Starling hasn’t been efficient, especially in his three point shooting. With next year’s roster, Starling will finally have adequate talent around him. The starting lineup and even the bench will have lots of options. The question isn’t about the talent any more, but big questions still loom about how Starling will be used. Starling averaged 5.5 three point shots last season, and 10.5 two point shots. He shot .268 from three and .480 from two… If he shoots that many threes again, it’s a coaching disaster. If he shoots that many twos, it’s probably a good thing. We definitely don’t want any more 1 of 10 three point shooting stinkers like at SMU. Red had him in the bench a whole ten minutes that game… But who else was he going to send in that was better? Next year, Red will have actual options off the bench. Another major difference is that we are unlikely to have half as many fruitless possessions next season where everybody is standing around and nobody can do anything. Starling took a lot of bad shots last season where the alternative was a shot clock violation. Next year, there will be fewer of those, and George is going to have the ball in his hands when it does most of the time. Starling is going to look a lot better next season. Nobody can say he’s been great so far… I don’t think anybody is arguing that he has been. He has done a lot in a difficult situation, and looking forward, I think he’s going to be in a much better situation to succeed in his last year at Syracuse. I’m looking forward to it.
