Ex-Syracuse AD Daryl Gross sues CNY tech giant for $1M over Super Bowl stadium deal

I don't have access to the full thing, but the first paragraph is shocking.

$10,000/mo. for a secondary job? How is that even OK with SU?

The schools top lawyer introduced Gross to JMA.

Yeah.

Well I’m not a lawyer but not getting an updated contract for the 2% revenue share seems pretty stupid. Not sure how enforceable a verbal contract is. Then you sign a final check also seems pretty foolish.

A verbal contract is enforceable. Of course, it depends what evidence you can support the verbal and if the judge/jury believes you.

Perhaps this isn't the most mature reason not to like him, but...

When Jake was AD, I sent him a few emails and I always got a personal, well thought-out reply. Once I was in Tucson for a meeting at a resort and was waiting in the lobby about to go out for a run while wearing a Syracuse shirt. I heard a voice say "where did you get that shirt?" I turned, and it was Jake with a big smile on his face. He was attending a conference with a bunch of other AD's and we had a great chat.

AD Wildhack has responded to the couple of emails I sent him (and no, they BOTH weren't about the subject of #44. One of them may have been. There is really no way to know...). I'm sure he gets bombarded constantly, so his response was much-appreciated.

Anyway, I was in South Bend for an SU-ND game and was standing in a quiet area with a few other SU fans. They may or may not have been members of this board, I honestly don't recall. Probably though. Nobody else within a good 50 feet, and certainly nobody that was not wearing blue and gold. Gross strolls by, not appearing to be in a hurry, and we called over to him. He glances over, gives us a quick wave, and keeps slowly walking. Perhaps I am expecting too much for the AD to stop for a few seconds and say hi to a small group of fans who have travelled to see the team (a day trip for me, but the others not so much).

Just a different approach perhaps, but as an alumnus and fan I always appreciated the other AD's taking the time to make the personal contact.

He was trying to quietly sneak away from IthacaBarrel, who was letting him have it for bringing a USC duffle bag to the game.

Going from Jake to Gross was too much culture shock at one time. One guy liked to have his own private box to watch the game with minimal disruption. The other tried to glad hand to the point of putting people off.

That explains the two phones :D

I exchanged emails with Jake back in the day. Short, direct, and clearly from him.

I met Gross the evening before the SU at GT game in 2013. Had a good chat and he was shocked when I pointed him to Stone Mountain (“The Stone Mountain?”). I was also part of a text (or email) chain with him after the quirks of Ernie Davis’ statue became apparent. I also met him a few times leading up to the 2013 Final Four.

A few years later I met Wildhack and Dr. Syverud at an SU alumni event in Atlanta.

Good events/encounters all around. Each was different.

That being said, my best sporting event encounters with SU athletic department employees were with Floyd Little and Jason Poles. :)

gotta imagine discovery will be difficult now that so much time has passed. I’m sure they’re hoping something exists in an email or text somewhere but that’s a long time to wait.

Maybe trying to force a few extra bucks out of a settlement but makes Gross look desperate.

Enough for me to hate him

Interesting read
I did some work at JMA, around 5-10 years ago. One of the higher ups told me that the owner, or one of their major players, was either arrested or under investigation for some shady stuff, money laundering or something. I didn’t think much of it, or even care. But now you say the used car salesman “Dr” Gross has some connection. And now he wants his cut. Color me intrigued. I’ll be interested to see what comes of this now.

Maybe I am a goon, but if I am anywhere outside of Syracuse and see anyone with Syracuse gear on I stop and say hello to them or shout Go Orange?
