Missing out on his chance to play on the big stage of the NCAAT could cost Fab huge money. Just one or two games where he could have dominated the paint and blocked 5-8 shots would have sent his draft stock soaring. Now who knows if he goes any better than late 1st round at best.

Why would anyone spend big money on a guy who showed up out of shape, got himself arrested and then didn't do what he needed to do to stay eligible? Anyone who drafts him in the first round is a fool. He'll get drafted in the second round where he won't get any guaranteed money and then get shipped to the NDBL or Europe where he'll actually have to work to get into the NBA.

As for him not staying eligible, I don't think the NBA teams care. This is true to a slightly lesser extent for players who get arrested. Yes, he was overweight last year, but he dropped 30 pounds and significantly improved his game. He's an athletic 7-footer with a good frame. I see him going in the first round.

I agree that not playing in the tourney could affect his draft stock. One interesting side note is that when teams base drafting a guy mostly on a strong performance in the tourney (as opposed to a weaker performance during the rest of the season), they usually draft too high.

Exactly. If Melo stayed out of trouble off the court, kept himself eligible this year, and spent another year in school to develop his offensive game, then he would have a chance for the big $$$'s.

Yes... I still think he goes in the first because of his size and potential. But no question he lost a big opportunity to display his skills by skipping the ultimate stage for NBA scouts.

Bullsheet. Our own John Wallace was projected to be picked in the 16-20 range as a Jr., when he entered his name in the draft. (old rules). He came back, led SU to the final game, was the best player in the tournament, and went #18, I believe. It actually cost him $$ to not go early. They will work him out, talk to JB, talk to his Brazilian coaches, and decide. He will be in the top 20 picks in the draft, easy.
Why do people want him back? Because he could be really good next year. Why would the NBA not think the same thing.
BTW - when his ACD is done, his arrest is void.

Yes missing the tourney probably cost him some bucks. But all this hate being thrown his way and now he is suddenly lazy and a problem, etc. Coach Boeheim isn't saying that. He said he has a ton of respect for the guy and that he is a great kid and that he's a hard worker, improved more in one year, through hard work, than any player he has ever coached, etc.

The facts aren't really backing up all the flame being spewed at the guy right now.

He is as interesting as any big man in the draft this year.

1st round lock, possible lottery.

Fab has shown he has great work ethic in basketball. He's a definite first round pick. Probably even a lottery pick. He's an athletic, 7 foot man with great defensive instincts. He won't slip to the 2nd round.

I couldn't be more certain that no NBA general manager will want Fab because he could be really good next year. At that level, he won't be.

He'll get drafted, but it won't be with any expectation of near-term success.

I see him as a Javale McGhee

I don't watch any Wizards games, but there are some similarities there - much-maligned space cadet with a seemingly high ceiling? Pretty good comparison.
