The face off stats need to improve. I think the issue is more about winning the ensuing ground ball than winning the draw. As for goalie stats: I compared Madonna's stats to the other ACC goalie stats and there are a few things that really stand out. (I was able to get the exact amount of shots faced for each goalie except Duke. They don't keep that stat, so I took the total number of shots faced and subtracted the saves made by the back up goalies in mop-up duty.) Player / Games Played / Saves / Goals Allowed / Shots Faced / ShotsGame / Save % / Strength of Schedule /Min Played D. Madonna(SYR) 14 126 149 488 35 .458 2 820:21 D. Fowler(DK) 15 126 109 441 29 .536 16 783:02 A. Rode(UVA) 14 127 128 420 30 .498 7 675:55 A. Bassil(UNC) 8 66 64 214 27 .511 10 348:02 J. Pezzula(UNC) 12 54 69 200 17 .439 10 388:18 M. Schmidt(UND) 14 103 108 370 26 .488 3 788:11 A couple things stand out. 1) He has seen a lot of shots. Opposing teams average 35 shots a game against him. That stat is somewhat skewed by the Albany game where they put 50 total shots up, but that's still a lot of shots. 2) The strength of schedule he played against was very tough. The closest S0S was Matt Schmidt, who played 32 less minutes and faced 118 fewer shots. Note that Schmidt's save pctg is .488, compared to Madonna who has a .458 save pctg with 32 more minutes played and 118 more total shots faced. Overall, given the situations he has been put in, I think he has played very well during the regular season. Even with the UVA game getting any from him, it never got out of hand, he made some excellent saves and the team was still in a position to win that game. A lot of people jumped on the hate wagon after that game because he only had 5 saves. UVA absolutely destroyed the net, getting a lot of room and time shots that should have been contested. Sure, he probably wants a couple back, and there were a few he probably should have stopped, but there were plenty of other reasons they lost: first time GBs, poor shot selection, poor defense, poor face off performance, etc. People just blamed him because it's easier to blame the goalie. After his showing today I think it's safe to say he rebounded nicely from that game and hopefully the team has everything squared away, should they be fortunate enough to go dancing tomorrow.
