I'm very happy to see that Coyle is not afraid to make changes as warranted. You can't use fear of a new hire being worse than your current lot as a reason to not make a change. That's as much a sign of a poor manager as being cavalier and shooting from the hip. Let's face it, on a list of responsibilities for a college FB HC, #1 is winning games. If you can't achieve that, then nothing else really matters. You can be a fantastic citizen, like Shafer, or a complete doosh like Lane Kiffen - if you don't win games or show a path to improvement you won't last. And that's exactly the point we reached this season and Coyle acted and rightfully so. Is this where I thought we would be towards the end of November? Heck no. I had faith in Shafer to get this thing back on track and have us bowling in spite of the stuff that was spewed by dinks like Stewart Mandel saying we'd win 2 games. And after 4 games, and with the development of the freshman, it looked like we're right on track. And then the wheels came off, and game after game was highlighted by in game decisions that even a first year coach shouldn't struggle with. I really think things were over after Pitt and the remainder of the games leading to now were just the final nails. I wish Coach Shafer and his staff nothing but the best. They were all class acts, they did things the "right" way and I truly appreciate and respect that. But at the end of th day, it was best for the program that we go in a different direction. We have an AD that has actually made the right decision at the right time in regards to the football program, in my opinion. And that makes me very hopeful. I'm looking forward to who will now be the face of the program, I hope the kids stay and see this through, and I also hope a few guys from Shafer's staff want to be and are retained. We have some talent at the assistant level and they are all good guys.
