Russell scored an ACC Championship record four goals in the squad's quarterfinal victory. "I don't think Emma would even think of that," head coach Ange Bradley said of Russell's record-breaking performance. "I think she is very happy that we won and are able to get a chance at North Carolina tomorrow and to get to the finals." "It was a really special one because it was the ACC Tournament," stated Russell. "To come out and for our team to perform so well is really something special." Russell's matched the program record for a goals scored in a single game. The Enniskerry, Ireland native had a hand in every tally on the day, assisting on graduate student forward Kati Nearhouse's goal. Russell was one point shy of the Syracuse record for points in a single contest, as well. Syracuse (14-4) opened the contest with a bang against Boston College (13-6), scoring the opening goal within the first 30 seconds of the game. Freshman midfielder Laura Hurff fed a pass to Russell inside the scoring circle. Russell put the ball into the right corner to give the Orange a 1-0 lead early. BC responded quickly with a goal of its own in the fifth minute of action. Eagles junior forward Kelcie Hromisin converted a penalty corner to knot the score at 1-1. It appeared that the game would go into halftime tied, but Russell had other ideas. She collected a rebound in front of the net and slotted it for her second goal of the afternoon, giving Syracuse a 2-1 edge headed into intermission. Boston College came out of halftime firing. In the 37th minute, Hromisin tied it up with her second goal of the contest. Hromisin emerged from a scrum in front and put it past junior goalkeeper Jess Jecko to knot things up. From there it was all Russell. In the last 11 minutes of the game, she would go on to score two more goals and register an assist. Junior midfielder Alyssa Manley was credited with an assist on Russell's third goal, a reverse shot from the top of the shooting circle in the 59th minute. After Boston College pulled its goalkeeper in favor of an extra field player, Russell came through again. She would score her fourth of the game with four minutes remaining and followed that up with an assist to Nearhouse with four second remaining to seal the Syracuse victory. The Syracuse University field hockey team takes on No. 1 North Carolina, the tournament's second seed in the ACC Championship semifinals on Friday afternoon. The game is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. It will be broadcast live on ESPN3, as well.
